If it whines that bad, it ain't right. Could lead to an early failure that's beyond the warranty. Take it back, then take it back again until it's right. That's what lemon laws are for.
The minimum I would accept would be to get it documented and an extended warranty.

I agree, take it back so they can make it right. Maybe try another dealer. You may also want to test drive another Taco to see if it makes the same noise as yours.

Gear whine in common in the Tacoma and Toyota on many occasions has called it normal. We have hundreds of threads on it.

I hear a constant, loud whining coming from my wife ever since I bought the truck. Will they replace her under warranty? :notsure:

In my jurisdiction, the wife warranty runs out after 1 year. Then you’re stuck with her.

They all make a whine, some louder than others. This has been an annoyance since 2016. To date, I dont believe anyone has actually seen the rear diffs fail, its just a minor noise. You can keep replacing them but its really just a waste of time.

Mine has a faint whine, as did the ones I test drove. I'm not saying don't try to get it fixed, that's your call.
I chose to leave factory, since most have it, and the dealer playing swap-a-part will most likely make it more unreliable.

try some 110 weight gear oil. i think the 85 weight stuff is too thin. good for fuel economy but bad for noise and vibration. also grease your u-joints.

Wasnt there something awhile back about a factory shim that fixed this issue?

Toyota replaced the chunk (differential) three times in my Supra before they got it right.

I have seen several posts about differentials being swapped out and continue to have noise . The issue is they are swapping it out with the same exact one . No new design. It will not implode likes others stated here it’s a noise . Is it annoying yes .

I can't tell if I just don't have the noise or I'm just not that sensitive to it because I don't notice it and there are a lot of complaints about it. Same goes for the transmission though.

You also get a good amount of road noise in these cabs. My soft top JK with 35s is quieter inside than my taco is.

toyota says it is a characteristic of the tacoma trd off road. And you are right they just replace one whining diff with another just like it so that isn't an option .Has anyone used sound deadener with good results?

My 2012 had rear dif noise for 200k miles. Never failed or go worse. My 21 makes the same noise.
