Do your best to find a truck where are you currently live. (New Mexico). There is NO SUCH THING as a clean older truck anywhere north of Virginia or east of Iowa. Where are you live you have 20 and 30 even 40-year-old vehicles with clean bodies and undercarriages. In New York, for that matter, the Midwest or anywhere in the Northeast these trucks have spent season after season in salt and calcium chloride. It is not uncommon to see four and five-year-old trucks with severe rust issues, particularly on the undercarriage which a lot of people don’t look at. I’m sure plenty of members here can chime in.... but there is no such thing as an older truck in good condition anywhere in the upper Midwest or Northeast unless it got parked November to April every year....Or happened to be shipped here from the West Coast or the deep South. And the rust is structural. People make the mistake of looking a vehicle over and look at the paint and sheet metal. The real damage is underneath on frames, axles, springs, brakes, brake lines, fuel lines, fuel tanks, driveshaft etc. etc.

Oh I’m from Boston, around there vehicles are seen as disposable, 5-6 years and get rid of it, nobody modifies their trucks (except jeep bros) because they just rust out. I’m def looking for find something around here, AZ, or Socal.

That’s another reason i’m looking to pick up an older 4x4, i’d hate to look out the window and see my tacoma, which i’d barely be able to take off road anymore, just rusting away on the street

There used to be many reasonable older vehicles out in the area you just described. I think the prices have doubled in the last three or four years… Mostly thanks to the price of new cars, dealers and eBayer’s and The Shortage Of Everything. I also would love to find an old Cherokee XJ. I missed my chance by waiting too long. They’ve gotten pricey too. I remember buying my wife a 30,000 mile 1999. I believe I paid somewhere around $12,000 for it in 2001..... I would have to pay quite a bit more than that now for 30,000 mile one. It’s always interesting looking for an older 4 x 4 and I hope you find one.

Assuming you have equity on your current truck, A 20 yr old vehicle will need work.
So it better be little money.
Guess it just depends on what you want to pay and can find.

Yeah car payments suck, I’m so happy I only have 5800$ left, can’t wait to pay thing thing off. I’ll throw a huge party haha.

Rangers are awesome, very reliable and capable trucks. I would get 2004 and up though. They updated the cassettes for the timing chains 2004+. That 4.0 is a very good engine, just thirsty.

XJs are awesome too, those inline 6s are one of the best engines ever made.

    Good luck.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Early Friday post if you ask me. Posting on a Tacoma forum looking for something OTHER than a Tacoma.
Many decades ago I owned a Chevy LUV (turned into a real POS). It was an inexpensive way out of the Chrysler I owned at the time. After that it's been nothing but Toyota.

I had an overall good experience owning my 99 Cherokee. That thing leaked coolant, oil and ran on hopes and dreams but it went over 200k miles. I drove it to 1500+ miles on a trip and it never missed a beat. Dumb things would break all the time like the hood release cable or cheap interior plastics. I parked it on a farm for a year after we moved and when I finally sold it we jumped it and it ran, albeit the alternator had seized. They are cheap and easy to work on, although nicer examples are getting more pricey just like everything else.

    90s Nissan hardbody FTW.

That's assuming you're good with literally zero safety features... If not, I'd stick with what ya got, especially if you bring your friends and family along with you.

Whatever you decide, don't buy a vehicle from the Northeast. Buy it New Mexico and take it up there. Between the bad roads and the winters, I would never buy a car from up North.

Have you considered refinancing your truck to lower the APR? That way you can still keep it and possibly have extra cash in your pocket

Yeah but he is not looking at overly expensive vehicles to replace it with. He will come out ahead if he can get something reliable.

If it were me in this situation I would be looking at an older Ranger or Frontier. XJ's are good but can cost you quite a bit to get it reliable. Not the ideal vehicle if looking for something turnkey, unless the right one comes along that is.

LOL - someone hasn't looked at LC/LX prices lately. A lateral move financially for a 20+ year old truck.
