I ended up using a 16 oz water bottle, drilled the cap to fit the flap wheel shaft and had to split the bottle to fit it around the die grinder, threaded the cap back on then taped it closed. The thumb hole has been opened up and the grip feels better, stain and tru-oil planned for this weekend.

This sounds like really neat work.

Also sounds a lot like gas welding or brazing -- not that I have brazed anything in almost 40 years.

Nice work! I have always admired woodworkers -- especially as I have no skills or patience for it.
I never used a circular saw until I was in my 30's. (and still suck with one...)

I grew up on a farm so I learned early how to work on mechanical stuff, but when dad retired he built a wood working shop, so I had to learn more!

I really wish I knew more about metal welding, I do intend to learn some day.

These are just nice because the hand I hold the rod with does almost no work, the small rod gets so hot it just flows. On larger parts using thicker rod to weld bigger seams I have to do what I'd call a "weave" with the rod and its a lot more effort and heat in your face. Still fun, but in a different way.

The weaving I'm describing reminds me of some welding I've seen done, either mig or tig. The trick then is mastering the speed and amount of heat so you neither under fill or over fill the seam. In that way, it has always reminded me of caulking which I learned much earlier in life.

    But I digress...

I grew up fixing and caring for things out of necessity - mowers, cars, washing machines, plumbing, furnaces, etc. -- if I couldn't fix it, it didn't get fixed.
Never really built anything in my youth as building requires materials and that was money that we just didn't have. :sadviolin:

It is funny, very late in life my mom talked about "all the things we did without" -- I never really considered it, we had food, a roof and a lot of books, what more does one really need? ;)

I was always the type who wanted to learn how things worked. If you remember bikes that had solid rubber tires, when I needed a new rear wheel I asked to keep the old one. Learned how to rebuild a coaster brake when I was 4-5. I preferred to fix my own bikes so I could get it done faster than bringing it to the shop anyways, though some of the new upgrades in the 80s I didn't know how to do right away.

My parents are frugal, we grew up in a rich town and definitely were not wealthy. Just was more important to them for us to grow up in a nice area versus buy nice cars and whatnot

Kind of like this? I haven't tried it in decades, wasn't good at it then either.

My mom grew up during The Depression so conserving and getting the most use out of everything is hard wired into my DNA it seems.

I read an article about Depression Era people where the author said "The Depression left a scar" on the people who lived through it. One of my friends talks about his growing up then and says "you couldn't buy a job".

The problem I have discovered about this upbringing -- you tend to save everything, always with the thoughts: "this is a perfectly good..." or "someone could use this for ..." and make do with what you have.

One can become a prisoner of this kind of thinking -- so concerned with saving, conserving and being self sufficient that we end up wasting the most valuable thing of all -- time.

This is very timely in my life now. My brother in law's dad passed away this summer, 89. He lived in the time as a very young child. We were talking yesterday while clearing and transporting stuff and said that our parents, moreso his (mine are early/mid 70s) were raised by people who survived that time and as a result were very self reliant, frugal, and "waste not, want not". We found quite a few pieces of copper pipe and other stuff similar that was made versus purchased as a whole for those reasons.

    Just an old joke.

My folks were both born in 1925, so grew up during the Depression. Nothing was ever wasted, nor was there much 'free time'. Always work to be done on a farm. I hated it, and I loved it too.

One I also like. Especially today, so much of it. I grew up in a rich town and it amazed me the shit people threw away..I don't keep junk but I'm not one to toss out perfectly good things even if I don't have an immediate need of it

Perhaps like that, though also with a gun that had a spool feeder. The motion of the tip and the pattern of the weld was what I had noticed was similar to the pattern I'll pull the rod in to fill whatever the gap is.

My first thought was "This isn't going to work, I can't tighten the collet." That's when the thought hit to split one side of the bottle and tape it back together. Thanks everybody!
