Mechanic installed my new rack.. Now this defect... Does this look bad?

I understand man, I really do. I just can't fault the guy for doing it the way it has to be done to make money.

Can someone spend 4 or 5 hours soaking and gently tapping till it maybe come loose? Yep.

He wont stay in business though.

Seems to me if the mechanic would have just put a new bolt in which most likely they did not have .

I can say I always install all new hardware on my rust belt vehicles .

I can see calling the Customer your truck will not be done for 3 more days waiting on parts from Toyota.

Telling your mechanic they're doing it wrong is like telling your surgeon they didn't do your stitches right.

If you're OCD about certain things, it's probably best to just do it yourself.

Older vehicles often require hammers and torches to work on them.

Nah, he'd just charge $70/hr to do it that way.

Oh wait, is that expensive? Yeah... it is, lol

 

If it were mine I would find it perfectly acceptable considering the circumstances.

Take the advice offered - if you're OCD do it yourself and take the chance to learn about your truck. That's what I did and I started not knowing how to swap a battery to doing body swaps and am now halfway through a 4x4 conversion on my Prerunner.

Take the time to do things the way you think they should be done because I guarantee nobody else will - and if they do you'll be paying for their time. I'm OCD about my shit and learning how to wrench has given me the chance to do it the way I want to do it and I take peace in mind knowing it was done right.

What happened there is common and I wouldn't sweat it. If you were installing that rack and pinion and tried for hours to get it off gently you'd start chiseling away too, trust me.

 

When I got a project coming up....I step thru the steps to get off what I got to get to...
and then its 'youtube time' to become an educated idiot...tips and special tool ideals..

That's always 90% of job - get off old broken piece and keep rest of car intact....

that's when i make a list of tools and parts to get it done....

But most importantly start soaking my 22yr old connections with PB blaster or even better
'Deep Creep' DAYS ahead of time.......JUST TO AVOID PROBLEMS LIKE THIS...
even if I had someone do it for me....it only makes sense... to make that mechs life easier.....

you have to plan for success....

Or learn to accept what ever the rescuers offer or have at that time......

 

The alternative for that mechanic was to keep your truck an extra day or 2....to let it soak...
and then charged you more appropriately......

If we had had an agreed upon price....and I was the mech, I would of taken a pic of the seized part...adjusted the invoice under ideal I cant send iffy stuff back out on the road.....unforeseen liability concerns...

OF course I would of called or messaged you upon discovery...let you decide quick or good..........of course he's not obligated because public safety concerns.....he'd be named in the lawsuit with you.....

It would of been to bad for you either way....

Good news is ....must not be any casting flaws in that knuckle ...it would of broke with the beating.....

Here’s mine, took it out the other day. No shortage of rust here. I don’t think OP is nuts. I think the mechanic started beating on it before removing the bolts fully. It won’t go anywhere if they’re still in.

 

Who use 5lb sledges and cold chisels to get shit to move.
