DIY vs. Dealer Bilstein 5100 Story

So I finally gave in and bought all four new bilstein 5100s to level out the Taco. I was debating about doing the rears myself vs having someone else (dealer maybe when TSB is done finally). They quoted me at over 2 hrs to do the rears, while also averagine $109 an hour. So $218 to install 4 bolts, so I decided to say screw that. I backed the Taco in the garage and 45 mins later (30 mins installing, 15 mins finding out how to get the friggin top nut from spinning, Thanks Chris4x4 for an old thread about the 5mm allen wrench recessed on top!).

So moral of the story, thanks TMW for all of the information and inspiration, my wallet definately thanks you!

been there many a time. I actually always get a quotes for a project that i am goign to do myself. It feels great when done and you think about the money saved. Then i try and convince the wife that I should spend the money i saved on tools...etc

 

Nothing like turning wrenches on your own ride! Except maybe buying mods for your ride.

Very true! Was nervous with a new truck, only 3 months old and didn't think i'd be doing this so quickly, ha. At least I have more money towards the next mod, just need to figure out what's next...

 

Yeah I have done it several times Im willing to bet I can do the fronts under an hour. Labor is crazy!!

 

Dealer only gets my warranty work, I love to do the rest.
