I guess I should have glanced more into the manual. I had no idea it had speed adjusted volume. I turned that off, can't wait to head to work to see the difference. Did I just say I can't wait to go to work? Someone slap me!

Just bought an 09 on saturday (with out the JBL system) and I am very disappointed with the volume of the stereo.
So is it not worth changing only the speakers?

If you think the regular volume sucks, wait til you try plugging in your iPod, with the iPod cranked I can max my stereo and still not be hurting. I'm changing my deck out on Dec 26th, supposedly Santa's gonna be good to me this year!

The head is have the problem. It has a regulator to limit the volume - very disappointing. I replaced mine with a Sony head, much much better.

As for speakers, not sure if Toyota indulged in anything better for '09, but the ones in my '08 were no-quality paper whiz-cone speakers. No high end and the bass, well - what bass. I ended up replacing all the speakers and added in a powered sub to add in a little extra bass.

Cash? Not a lot, couple hundred for the head, about a hundred for all four speakers, and another c-note for the sub. May not win any audio shoot-outs, but when I turn it up on a great tune, it simply rocks.

I replaced my stock speakers with Polk Audio Momo speakers and put a 1000 watt Phoenix Gold amp and a JL Audio Cleansweep in mine with the stock head unit. Sounds plenty loud with the setting at 20. I also put RaamMat in the doors. I wanted to keep the stock look because there are too many social parasites where I live.
