On another note for all you who are on the fence. I bought the VFTUNE software/dongle bundle for $350. I paid Papa $150 for his tune pack. You get 8 tunes in the pack. Regular gas (81-87 octane w/4 different tip ins), and premium gas (91+ w/ the same 4 tip ins). This is a HUGE value.

My Colorado Diablosport tuner cost $350. The custom tune pack from BNR cost another $150 and it was a one shot locked tune based off of one week of data mapping.

This to me seems like a much better value. I tried 4Lo with the LT throttle tip in through some mild wheeling and it seemed to me a bit to twitchy to control when you where rolling around. I would actually bring the laptop with me and maybe load SLT or Wife tip in for wheeling after I got where I was going.

What I'm trying to say is that with the VFTUNE bundle, you are not limited to a single tune and the KD tune pack gives you 8 to play with. You can also use the VFTUNE software for other vehicles by adding credits although I don't know what they cost.

This is far more flexible an option than that Diablosport which does not support Tacos anyways.

    Just saying.

    Hello Guys!

I'm new in the forum and been learning quiet a bit, but the more I got into this thread and drive my truck the more I realize about the gas pedal and transmission lagging..

My question is, do I have to wait to a certain mileage on my truck to get it tuned? (I'm currently at 600miles, yes just bought the truck last week :D) Also, does the tune affect any kind of warranty or anything if I bring it to the dealer for any service?

    I'm in Austin TX.

    Thanks!!!

Can't answer the warranty question but life is too short to drive a Tacoma that does not have a KDMax tune.

Edit: I think that I am going to put that in my signature.

The tune is going to do what you need it to. Even if there are issues and sometimes there are, @PapaRee will work with your local tuner to make everything right.

Can’t say it won’t void any warranty can say haven’t heard that it has. Ever.

Get it done you won’t regret it, you’ll only regret you waited too long if you’re waiting for a past the warranty mark and by that time you’ve already did a trade in cause the stock tune is such crap!

I’ve been tuned for 5 years, taken to the dealer multiple times. Never a word said about it.

Worst case get a refund and tune to stock.

As far as warranty goes there have been cases gone to trial where it was established that the manufacturer had to prove that the aftermarket part actually caused the repair issue in order for a warranty to be voided. So if the dealer somehow discovers an aftermarket tune they cannot just say warranty voided. Besides, car dealers get paid to work on warranty stuff but if it is not under warranty the customer can go to an indy shop and the dealer looses out.:)

FWIW - I loaded the KDmax tune, soon after its release, at 1,800 miles and haven’t looked back.

I did mine at 800 miles. Do it you won’t regret it. Truck will drive the way you expect it should have from the factory.

I believe the " tune" runs around $300. For an extra $200, if you have a laptop, it's worth the extra $ to be able to flash back and forth between the 8 included tunes IMHO.

It's really easy and takes only minutes.

As long as dealer can’t see that it’s been flashed you’re fine. I don’t think Toyota thinks people are tuning for power like with vw/Audi/HD etc so it doesn’t show the ecu had been flashed like others do. Kd doesn’t pop up

Speaking of power with the KdMax tune, I can't find any info on how the power changes vs stock. Sifted through dozens of pages on here. I got my 21 off road tuned at 500 miles and now have 1500. I love it, throttle response is great and the shift points are fixed vs the factory tune. It does feel more powerful but is that a placebo from the change in throttle response? Anyone ever dynoed on a stock tune back to back with KdMax to see the difference? I don't care too much as I've stated I like it, but I'm curious. I have a vw GTI with bigger turbo and water meth tuned to about 370hp. At 2800 pounds it's a riot, just kinda curious where my truck is at

We’ve done about 5 different trucks. Every one was different and had different results. But we gain about 20-30 hp on the tune. We have done stock trucks and lifted, loaded and geared trucks.
We realized that HP gains are not as important as DRIVEABILITY.

I searched my computer for pics, found one.

I’m in Natchez Mississippi at the hunting camp. I’ll be here till Sunday.
If anyone in the area wants to get tuned, PM me. I’ll check my messages regularly (although we have terrible service in the woods). I have to walk out to a special area outside and hold my phone just right, lol. Although we did just get WIFI in the camp! Yippee!

You're not struggling till you're standing on a gooseneck trailer hitch trying to find that 1bar of signal. I feel old sometimes, used an old bag phone back in the day in West Texas, they had 3 watts of power vs the .6 I think they have now. No KD max tune then. Lol
