Ok let's see if you guys can help ...I've searched all over the internet with no luck......I have a manual 2wd 5 speed from an 06 tacoma that's been sitting in the truck a while ...went to drive it today and the truck will not go into gear.....it acts as if it's still in neutral or like the clutch is pressed In...while running I can move the shifter freely into any position and no movement ...I can start the truck with the shifter in any position and no movement ...pedal feels normal and I can see the slave cylinder move some when the pedal is pressed ...when moving the shifter it sounds like it's changing gears inside the Trans but will not engage ...any suggestions ??? Can the clutch be stuck in position like the pedal is pressed in even though the pedal returns ?

Pull the rubber boot out from the clutch fork and try to see inside.

Ok...what would I be looking for? ...I did experience a few days ago when I started the truck I went to press the pedal to put in neutral to crank it and the pedal was hard ...I pressed harder and it finally pressed down so I assume that's when something failed or was damaged ...truck has sat for about 8 years ...I crank it once in a while but never drive it ...trans has 40k miles

I've heard of the clutch not engaging and can't shift or grinds but I'm having the opposite issue like the clutch wont disengage if that makes any sense

It has a driveshaft lol .. I can push and roll the truck with the shifter in any gear position. ...wish it was as obvious as a missing drive shift

My guess I’d the clutch fork, or the throw out bearing seized on the shaft.
But, that’s a total guess. I’d be “fiddling” with the fork just hoping to get “lucky”.

That would cause it to stay stuck in the engaged position? Not sure if I'm wording it correctly but it acts like I'm holding the pedal down and not releasing it ...last time I cranked it the pedal was stiff and I leg pressed that hoe down lol...now it's not working ...pedal feels normal now but I'm always engaged now ....I'm no mechanic but I can fix anything once I understand what I'm up against ...I understand how a clutch works just don't get why it's doing what it's doing ...I've replaced worn out clutches that wouldn't engage or was grinding but never experienced this issue ...thanks again for any input

Trans has maybe 3 miles since I filled it...this is a motor swap into an 88 4runner and when I did the swap the fluid drained an I refilled it

Yeah, if the fork is bent or slipped off the pivot it could cause it to stay stuck.
Or possibly the throw out bearing is hung.
Like Bishop said, pull the boot and have a look.

I'll pull the boot tomorrow and look ....if it's either of those the fork or the bearing either one would call for removing the trans to repair or replace correct? ....I swapped the engine and trans with 40k miles into a 88 4runner so most likely have to pull the whole engine/trans to remove the trans ...don't think I can access the bolts on The top of the trans since doing the swap :/

I wonder if the slave cylinder piston isn't seized in the bore, you could remove the slave cylinder and see if you can push the piston in.

    Good thought

Not sure about this, sounds like something was “stuck” and then got really stuck?

That would be amazing if thats all it is ...I sure don't want to drop or pull the trans out ....thats does make sense and would cause my trans to act the way it does ...I had my wife push the pedal and the slave moved about 1/2 inch but that's it ...thanks this is something to check for sure and why I came on here for help

Lol ....indeed ...maybe it's the slave cylinder like dm93 said ..which would make sense why it thinks the pedal is pressed down

Going to guess the slave cylinder is corroded internally and piston rod is stuck in the extended position. It may move a little but still not fully retract. Try unbolting the slave cylinder, (leave hydraulic line attached) and see if the clutch fork moves when slave is removed. With truck in gear, then see if you can still push it. If it no longer freely roll, then you found problem.

The trans is in my 88 4runner ...this is an old pic when I had a tundra v8 in it ...now it has the 06 4cyl with 40k miles

If so, and you decide to remove it. Be ready for the clutch fork to “push” against you as you remove it.
Let us know what you find.
