I don't know that one either.
I tell you what though, last weekend's rear drum brake on the oldsmobile, I was sure wishing that I had the two spring tools. I used to have them years ago. I forgot how much easier the one tool for stretching the spring onto where it goes!! Ugh! What happened to those? Between 3 garages....probably somewhere...

Or when parts and perhaps labour make it more cost effective to replace.

Here is today's mystery tool revealed:
A spark plug boot puller. The heat tends to stick the boot to the plug quite well, yanking on it will damage the wire.

This tool lifts on the boot from the bottom - shown here off the engine.

Note the warning: Use with engine off, sad world sometimes...

Todays episode of Past Tech with Rusty isn't all that entertaining, just some new plugs in the old wagon.

    KIMG1780.jpg

Marvelous ease of access circa 1966.

    KIMG1783.jpg

This is the "bad" side, took all of 15 minutes for all 4. The blue tube encloses part of the exhaust manifold, it is for heating the air to the carburetor when the engine is cold. There is a bi-metallic spring in the air cleaner snorkel that allows the heated air to flow when it is cold and shuts as the engine warms up. No vacuum motor, no electric, just the flap with a spring.
It makes the rear plug a bit difficult to get at but just fussy, not horrible.

    KIMG1786.jpg

The plugs were really not bad, the issue with the cars running was (as expected) lurking under the distributor cap - the breaker points. They have a rough life, at 60 mph they open/close about 17,500 times a minute! Had to dig out the dwell meter to set them.
Note the red felt wiper, the distributor shaft needs to be lightly lubricated or the block on the breaker points will wear out very fast. The wiper keeps the lube (a light grease) evenly spread.

The last domestic vehicle to have breaker points was built around 1974.
