I recently purchased a Tacoma and it came with a Rhino Rack and basket. While this is something I would have eventually added to the truck myself I am not familiar with this brand and it has some major rust issues. Is this something I can clean up and re-coat myself? Or are they a loss? Currently the rack isn't being used but come spring time the basket will be used for dry bags and I will be carrying a paddleboard on the drivers side. Any tips would be great!

Well you could probably sand it down, prime and paint. I’m sure it’ probably lived in a corrosive environment and was never taken care off. Maybe you could just buy a new bar.

I had considered sanding it and then spraying with a bedliner coating.

Take it all apart, and take a wire wheel to it.. That’ll tell you how bad it really is. I’d wager you could get a good bit more use out of it.

If you can’t break through the metal with a chipping hammer- it’ll be alright for a bit ;)

Replace the cross bars with 1” aluminum or steel box tubing?

This is a solid plan. Im going to take a wire wheel to it and see if its corroded all the way through and if the original bars cant be saved ill cut some box tubing or sure.

its depends on how bad the rust is. i would take it off and sand it down to see how much damage there is. that box tubing probably isnt very thick so if its half rusted through i would just replace. whatever size it it may be 2”x1” and just get some new ones. probably find a local steel supply to cut to size if you dont have the means to do so.
