I meant you could use 3M strips to keep the mattress from sliding. Or Velcro for that matter.

 

Been wondering the same thing. I have a Coleman Full size, but it's too tall and too wide for my orientation. I have a couple single person sleeping pads that I lay next to each other - they're not extremely comfortable and also not the best size. So now I'm considering getting some 3" foam and cutting to the size I need.

 

I have the Exped Megamat single matress and it is SWEET! Worth every penny I spent on it. It has an r value of 8.1, couldn't be easier to set up, and is insanely comfortable.

 

I picked up one of the Exped 7.5 Deep Sleep Mat
Med Wide so its 25.6"x72" and 3" thick
Two side by side is close to the 53" bed width
Going camping this week and will be trying it out for the first time

 

I have one too and plan on getting a 2nd.

 

Wow those dimensions are perfect for the space I have in my design. Maybe I'll snag one or two!

 

The Megamat duo is that size also. 52x72 or something really close to that.

Trying something different to free up some space inside of my camper. I put 4 eyebolts in the ceiling and strapped my table top and main cushion to see if that will work.
So far they have stayed secured to the ceiling for a 200+ mile off-road trip last week without coming loose.
I have a camping trip this weekend, so I will see if this works and if I like it.

 

Tried out my Exped 7.5 for 4 nights of camping.
My friend happened to be using one as well.
We both felt it was too thin when inflated to a comfortable firmness and needed something added on top.
My hip went through when on my side.
You can inflate it so it won't but it was too firm for me.
I ended up adding more air to make it firmer and threw my thermarest on top and it was perfect.

FYI, just ordered the Exped 10 40x72 along with a Zodiak Canvas 0 deg Z Top sleeping bag and the optional booster quilt for winter/snow camping.
It's longer then the bed, 36x90, but there are some loops on the end so I'm going to fold the bottom up and use the loops to hold the extra up off my feet.

My 43yo Northface Bigfoot 5 deg bag was keeping me warm but I'm going to need something better for winter/snow camping.

 

I was looking at getting one of those, but I couldn't justify the cost.
So I went with an Amazon roll up foam mattress thing to go on top of my bed platform.
I'll be trying it out this weekend.

 

I thought I was the only one with an old bag (not wife). My 50 year old REI 0 degree Prime Grade A goose down mummy has never left me cold and is as good as new. Never stored in a stuff sack, machine washed in Woolite. I think it was a $225 bag 1971 $$$.

 

I was told this mattress on Amazon fits a long bed quite well, width and length… and I believe people have posted it here. It’s 4” so I bet it has good insulation although it reduced headroom as well. Has anyone tried it in winter conditions?

I’ve yet to pull the trigger, I was planning to wait for a sale. $199

Looks good but if I could make a suggestion- reduce the length of the eye bolts and add either fender washers or backing plates. The lateral stress caused by the straps pulling is likely going to lead to eventual cracking and enlargement of the holes through the fiberglass, especially when off-roading. Look at the way eyes/tie-downs are added to boats for an example. Just wouldn't want to see you get water intrusion into the fiberglass mat (most shells are chopper gun construction)- once you get water leakage started you'll get fungus and it'll start degrading the fiberglass.

 

Thank you, I had thought about that. These were the shortest eyebolts I could find, I probably need to take them back out and cut about a 1/2 inch off of each one.

 

Where'd you get your custom cushion? Or did you make it?

 

I might give that a try. Rtt is gonna go on the trailer, but sometimes I won't want a trailer.

 

one of my first build attempts I used unfinished birch and saw that it was picking up lots of scuff marks from different bins, lots of grease and dirt, dings on the faces and other blemishes. I use 3x polyurethane and some foam rollers to apply it. Couple coats, sand lightly between them.

 

You can always goe a custom mattress and cover. It might be a little more but those experts are pretty expensive to begin with. I got a 52”x72”x3” mattress and cover for I think less than 350. It goes up more obviously if u want 4” but the 3” has worked great for me
