Checking your oil after buying a new truck is like checking your oil after you have your oil changed. How many of the people blaming the OP instead of Toyota do that?

When I worked at a dealership they unloaded a car hauler full of new rams as the new vehicles were being parked 1 locked up ,no oil from the factory. They will go back to the PDI and go from there.

I checked mine when I left the lot and I check it at dealership when it’s changed. And shortly after that for oil plug leaks and such

When buying a new truck it is the dealers responsibility to go over the truck before handling it to the customer. Someone in the maintenance department did not do is job of making sure of that the truck was inspected. Just saying.

Guessing OP will check his oil from now on. all it takes is one time. I re torque my lugs after i have a shop do work on my wheels.... Why? because i found 2 missing lugs on a wheel after Cobb County Toyota rotated my tires. (never go to that dealership) 2/3 maintenance opportunities were screwed up.

I take my Taco to the first 8k check up and service then after that it goes to my local garage who I have dealt with years. When warranty issues arises then will take it back to dealer unless my local garage gets the ok to fix it. I also keep all my receipts on any work done.

    Update

The dealer said he thinks it wasn't filled correctly from the factory. He didn't have an answer for why the pre delivery inspection didn't catch it or why the oil light didn't come on until yesterday. He said they filled it and wanted me to monitor the oil level for a few hundred miles. I'm going to have everything documented in case there's a problem in the future.

He claims it was only down 1.5qts so there is no chance of engine damage.

    Good!
Now as a gesture of confidence in their diagnosis they should have no problem if you politely ask for the extended powertrain warranty to be included for your confidence in the vehicle and as a compensation for the inconvenience.

Regarding not checking the engine oil upon picking up the new truck:

The only reasonable thing anyone can say is that it would’ve been useful, given the situation, if OP had checked the oil level at the dealership before driving away. Perhaps he would’ve found an under filled oil level and it could’ve been corrected there, or he might’ve reconsidered. Or maybe it would be a data point that it was filled properly, which would help the current troubleshooting.

Beating him up over it isn’t useful, or reasonable. Either way the dealer should cover under warranty…we don’t even know what the diagnosis and outcome is yet.

Just a simple lesson to everyone, maybe someone else will benefit from this thread and inspect a vehicle more closely before purchase, and catch an issue that the dealer should have caught but didn’t.

because the pre delivery inspection is bull shit. Its a service that they assign entry level screw ups (like oil changes) with no QC and bill corporate for a decent profit.

To calm your nerves... A few oil threads ago, one TW 3rd gen driver stated that he puts 5.5 and calls it good.
And , you won't see the new oil on the stick on the hot engine even it is overfilled

I assume the truck is still running? That is really good to hear. Thats what the service manager said, but thats what he's paid to tell me. Its good to hear that someone is doing that regularly

interesting. Yea 1.5 qts isn't that much, and given your super low miles it is doubtful that there is damage unless the engine is burning it.

I would think it goes without saying; it's not likely it'll ever happen to OP again.
But, why stop at engine oil; might as well check the transmission, transfer case and diffs too. I very much doubt 'the holier than thou' are.
