Isn't the 2.7 a purpose built truck engine?

Just have to make sure you trade in at the perfect time. I got screwed by KBB values. My 2019 had a value hold steady around $42.5-44k for trade in value. I saw the values start creeping down to anywhere from $37-$40k and just as that happens my truck shows up at the dealer. Toyota announced a week or two earlier they were decreasing productions by 40% so I was hoping it would increase by the time my truck came in. Nope I picked it up on Aug 21 and at the dealer the trade in value for excellent was at $40,300. Told them I wanted anything above $42k and we settled at $41k as it was late and I didn’t want to play the game anymore. I checked the value 4 days later and it creeped up $2k and by the weekend hit again it was $42k-$44.5k for trade in.

Talk about horrible timing. Definitely frustrated with it but it is what it is and be mindful to watch that. Would have been helpful to know when the truck was actually going to arrive but my salesman was out of town for a week and didn’t want to bother him and nor did I or anyone else know how soon the values would start rising again.

Your probably going to have to see one listed and then go to who ever has , allocations are going to be slim and I would be cautious on any dealer that can guarantee getting one let alone in the colour you want.
A few of the bigger dealers in Alberta are making promises to try to lock in customers.
It will be interesting to see how it unfolds .

Should of held on to it and sold at your convenience, or the prices worked more to your advantage.

100% done deal before I put down the deposit. When it arrives I just need to sign the papers, hand over my Xterra, and pay the amount we agreed on.

Also, for reference - my truck is the first '22 coming to the dealership here. It was built 10/4 and expected to arrive 10/22-10/27.

I thought about it but I was trading in to get the sales tax incentives and pretty much had to close the deal that day. That and at that rate I wasn’t sure how or when the market would adjust. Even with a deposit they usually only hold the truck for you for 48-72hrs depending on when they say it’s ready. After that it is a free for all and there were plenty of folks trying to test drive it and look at it so it wouldn’t have lasted if I walked away or told them I would wait. As others have found out that even with a deposit down won’t guarantee anything until you sign the dotted line and get the keys.

I still got more than I paid for it but didn’t get as much as I could have.

Depends what you are in the market for. They already make such a limited run of TRD pro that it likely won’t change much even with the shortage.

This for me also. I was looking for a 2022 TRD Sport Access Cab and was told by a friend when they checked it was going to be 3K OVER MSRP....I called and was told the same thing. I was contacted by another dealer in my area by 3 different sales people and I asked all 3 if there was a markup OVER MSRP and none answered that question so I'm assuming YES. A third dealer said on the 2021's the only ones they were marking up were the PRO's and I didn't get an answer from the 4th dealer I emailed. I can't bring myself to pay at minimum $3,000 OVER MSRP...no way. I was intending on keeping my 2014 for years to begin with so I will just wait it out....if it ever gets better. Luckily for me I WANTED a new truck....I don't NEED one. 2014 4 cylinder with 54,000 miles on it should keep going for quite a long time yet. All 4 dealers I contacted were in North Eastern Pennsylvania.

    True
But Dealers don’t really have much control on the allocations and dealer trades are a thing of the past in this environment.
Dealers also selling and promising inventory they don’t have not unexpected, Hopefully you get the Truck you want if it’s from the dealer you had mental to me earlier just be aware they talk a big game but under deliver.

    ^^^This.

My 7 year old Subaru Outback has 'appreciated' by $3k to $4k in the last year. In the last month alone, it has increased by $800--that's from my latest Carvana quote. Dealers either give a lowball offer hoping it slips by or realize they have no hand to play.

After going "into the lion's den" today at a SoCal dealership, it's pretty clear $3k markup is the absolute floor for what I want in my Tacoma (TRD OR SB Lunar Rock). I showed these guys I had a firm, clean $3k no BS markup from a competitor, and they just weren't motivated to win the sale. I had printouts of everything to make it easy--my Carvana quote, CA new vehicle registration fees, TrueCar pricing on Tacomas, vspecs to compare, etc.

They made a few small concessions, but ignored my concern about 'state registration & fees' being $400 above what the state quotes. They said 'finance will work it out'--I said no, let's get the OTD quote right, then we can proceed. And that was that.

So I'm gonna bubble wrap my Outback until I can get a new Tacoma. Even at the regional market floor, I'm not getting a good Tacoma deal, but I am getting an great deal on the wagon* the Tacoma will replace. (Which will be a crap deal for some else, I guess.)

*We tried the stock Outback out in the Mojave, ground clearance was fine, but the geometry, CVT, and 4 cylinder engine clearly set a ceiling on how far one can drive before a tow will be necessary. Need the right tool for the job if we don't want to be walking into sight of a cell tower to call for help.

My trade is a 2005 Tacoma, my value doesn’t fluctuate very much. I could see a newer, more valuable truck being more sensitive to markets

All this used car appreciation talk... Y'all own houses? We're talking 6 figure changes in a year in many markets.

    Lot of inflation involved though...

No question there is inflation running rampant.

Hence 'appreciation' of value in quotes in my last post. The car is worth more to some degree because of supply disruption. But I'm not arguing against anyone who says the $ doesn't go as far . . . . a lot of $$$ was 'printed' in the last year when productivity was poor. Much of that seems to be going to new cars, houses, renovations--I'll just leave it at that to avoid inviting any overt political discussion.

I'm a homeowner and have always expected appreciation over time. It's shocking to me that any dynamic could be so severe as to make used cars have higher dollar value. Strange, concerning times.

Any idea when dealerships get an update on what they are able to get? Is it weekly?

Hence why we have deposits on more than one dealer. We are playing the game too. Haha.

We, unfortunately, had to play the crazy housing market buying our first home relocating jobs, and moving back by my family. Anywho, Chicago burbs is a silly market for sure, AS IS, people paying over appraisal, craziness all around. We got lucky and got ours for $15k under appraisal and already worth another $15k more. Can't lie a bit nervous something gonna bust, but from all the research I did, this is different from 2008 because there is a lack of supply and increased demand as opposed to the opposite, but at least I know we are better off than some people who paid over asking and were willing to pay the difference from appraisal.

Yup, property prices are nuts. Bought my lot 7 years ago to build my house. It was around $59K back then, but now similar lots are going for around $400K. Hopefully there will be a crash so property taxes will eventually come down. Not planning on moving so the lower it goes the better.

Hope it works out for you , tying up money at multiple dealers ( some owned by the same group of companies) you could always offer over MRSP that would almost guarantee getting the first Lime one in Alberta. Rumour has it the first 17 Cement PRO in Alberta went for 10k over MSRP……

Yeah, this is definitely a reasonable tactic. Technically, I did this for about a week, though only because one dealership was slow to release the deposit after my request to drop a hold. Certainly in walking away from my first option, I had a better opportunity with option #2 as well as the dealer, who likely has buyers wanting to pay 1.5x to 2x the markup I tolerated. Win-win.

The only downside I think is that this ties up inventory, artificially reducing supply. I'm starting to wonder if this is part of what is happening in some markets--if so, there will be a flux of released allocations that break the 'Tacoma drought' once multiple deposit holders start getting their trucks.
