We're also getting my wife a relatively common 4runner SR5 Prem. and I've placed deposits at 6 different dealerships around town so if one isn't willing to negotiate we can point out we have options. We'll see how it works...

    Oh look, another mod....
What state do you live in that gives out 4yr registration on new vehicles? In Texas it's only two years.

You put down deposits without agreeing on a price first? When I ordered (or reserved, or [insert preferred verb here]) my truck a couple weeks ago, it went in this order:

-Discussed what I wanted (trim, packages, color preferences)

-They looked for available inventory that they could get from another dealership (No luck)

-They looked for trucks in their existing allotment (Found one, printed the build sheet and showed it to me)

-I confirmed that I wanted to buy that specific truck

-We negotiated the price for the truck and my trade-in

-After agreeing on the final price, I put down a $1000 deposit

I would say you placed a deposit on an "Order"
I would say Westifer12 placed deposits on "Reservations"

Didn't have much room to negotiate, they still sell as fast as they can get them in.

About once per week, or less, if they didn't reach out first.

But, I started with a <1mo timeline, so not like I'll be emailing 40 times

I checked in with dealer 2 weeks later when truck was scheduled to go thru assembly line.
It took one more week for truck to make its way from California to northern Illinois.

I've been texting with the salesman - quite a few times the first week (How much to add the electronic tailgate lock / paint protection film / heated seats, ok I'll take this but not that, etc.), and then once a week since then. Last week to check if it was built on schedule, this week to see if they know when it's arriving.

Yep, passed on the LR earlier this year, with the decent upgrades to the Pro for 2022 and near the end of my bumper to bumper and hating the new tundra looks, dropped a deposit down on a MGM Pro, already worked out MSRP and $40k trade for my cement I paid less for new, lol.

Calling around and going into dealerships I found that markups in Southern Cali are anywhere from $9k - $12k, average MSRP $40k-$44k depending on the specs. A TRD Pro was sold with a $20k markup with an OTD price over $80K per sales manager at one of the local Toyota dealerships.

Highest quote OTD I got was $59k and some change for a 2022 Tacoma TRD OR while lowest OTD was $56k. Prices are just gonna go up from here for the next couple years if not longer in my opinion. Plus Tacomas hold their value. A lot of used ones go for brand new Tacoma's MSRP.

The way prices and inventory for the TRD OR are I'd be lucky to get one that's coming through the pipeline and just pre-contract it (which I may do). Obviously still looking to negotiate and not get ripped off but it looks like prices are not going down anytime soon.

Who knows with all this uncertainty, I might just have to bite the bullet and get what I've wanted for the past year and a half or so..

Honestly, you're talking about potentially paying $10K more than the same vehicle in other markets. You'd be well served to work with a reputable out of state dealer, fly in, and road trip home.

Just check the oil before you leave the dealership (referencing another thread).
