Reasons to mount a tablet in dash

I have the DMM mount in my 20 OR, and currently just have two phone mounts, one each for my wife and I. We use Apple Carplay, and that takes care of most everything we need right from the phone. Music, navigation, texts/calling, etc.

I see some pics out there where people have tablets or IPADs mounted as well, and just curious what people are using it for, that you can't do in the head unit. Maybe for older trucks without all the latest tech in the headunit? Not opposed to it, just wondering if there is some benefit that I'm just not aware of.

 

The kids do something called NETFLIX and CHILL with eggplant emojis.
We married guys don’t know such things.

Also you can download map data into the ipads or tablets. No cell network required.

 

Most people did it before CarPlay was a thing. Some still do cuz they’ll run 2 maps, one zoomed in and one zoomed out

Prolonged time in remote locations like Baja racing or over landing for accurate GPS maps and charts

 

I mounted my iPad so I could record my off-roading

 

Earthmate or other offroad mapping systems.

 

Takes all the fun out of it. Give SAR a chance, man.

 

I won't go back to anything but apple car play/AA.

I have no idea what my base unit is even like now.

A dedicated unit with its own sim card is next, but I like how seamless my phone operation is.
