Mostly just truing it up but a couple of spokes needed to be replaced.
My friend had them put a bare frame together for him. He bought a fork and wheels and everything put together and I know it was under $400. That was a smoking deal!

Wow, thats incredible! Landry`s is $75 to completely rebuild a wheel.

 

Milford was really cool when we dropped by there to see about getting our daughter from a 20" kids bike to a 24" youth mountain bike. No pressure, didn't try to sell us anything, answered all our questions (granted they didn't have any of what we were looking for, but still.. )

Bike people, thoughts on the REI house brand bikes (REI CO-OP)?

We were thinking of getting our daughter one of the 24" mountain bikes for Christmas as she's outgrown her kids 20" bike.

 

Respectable quality for what you're after. Should hold up fairly well to a growing kid.

 

Gracias good sir. Don't need anything crazy, just something that will hold up and has gears since we usually do ~8-9 mile rides on the bike path.

 

Eammon nailed it - and after seeing your use case, yeah REI will do A okay.

Only concern I have is - what is the path? Is it paved or gravel? If so, the mountain bike is going to have a lot of extra weight in the suspension and a lot of extra rolling resistance in the knobby tires. Gravel bike might work best if you're not in the roots, just a lot easier to ride and might not be as wieldy.

That one has a set of drop bars but you can find them straight bar, like this one.

 

I just bought a kid's Polygon bike for around the same price as the REI ones. Might be worth comparing the components to see if there's any advantage either way.

 

I mean it's mostly paved until the end where it's packed gravel. I'll check out the salsa / polygon that @Pugga referenced.

 

Uhhh that Salsa might be overkill. I just searched 24" gravel bike REI and that was the first to come up

Unfortunately I don't have anything for you right now I have a 26" Hard tail you could convert over but that seems (a) big and (b) not worth it. Otherwise it's full scale MTB and Road bikes.

The gravel bike will handle that gravel section, and also won't be as unstable as a normal skinny tire road bike.
