I assume this is vehicle weight? Try recovering a Tahoe thats rolling off a ledge on the side of a road, that required two 10,000lb winches.

 

the only relevant value is the lbf experienced by the equipment. You can talk in vehicle weight percentages or actually force. It doesn’t matter. It all boils down to the same thing. Is it tough enough and is it strong enough.

bulls$&&. Supposed insight. I’ve pulled tractors out with tractors. Trucks out with tractors. Trucks out with trucks. I’ve had my semi pulled out with other semis and with dozers. Many many times. The Tacoma is puny.

I’m not dodging anything. Lbs is already a force. The equivalent of mass kg in imperial is slugs not pounds.

 

You really need to establish a complete thought before typing it out so you don't have to go back and constantly edit/update your posts. Everything you've edited is irrelevant anyway.

that’s the point I mentioned. The average person just wants to recover their own vehicle. I’m not going out to recover a Tahoe over a cliff with my truck. In that case yes. Then maybe I would want to have a bumper. But I’m not in the business of professional recovery. And most aren’t.

The crossmember these attach to is not designed to support vehicle recovery, it's a piece of stamped sheet metal. It's made for shit to bolt to for vehicle transport or low speed, solid surface towing. It says this right in the owners manual.

 

Right on. I'm with you on this one. Real world experience from someone who works in the field. There is no reason to be creating massive dynamic forces when doing recoveries. If you are, you should reassess and take a different approach. When you work directly with this stuff on a daily basis you get to see the reality of what works and what doesn't. I've seen dramatic failures. A lot of dramatic failures. I have had the broken chain come straight at me and smash the windshield. I have seen welds fail and big heavy objects go sailing through the air. You know what caused each and every one of these? Human failure. Not structural failure. Some donkey gets all wound up and tries to save the day. Everytime it happened someone said OH SHIT LOOK OUT before the failure. It's clear as day when shit is about to break.
Rated or not it's pretty obvious when shit is about to hit the failure point. This is neither for or against the demon brackets. This is strictly a response to the entertaining back and forth that is going on in this thread. A lot of you spend a lot of time thinking about this stuff. Too much thinking. Time for a little doing, listening and learning.

 

A lot of us have a lot of experience. Just because people don’t go around rah rah’ing in a forum doesn’t mean it’s not there.

definitely. And one can even take that one further as well. Nothing says one has to get so stuck off-roading either. Lol. I’ve only been while driving gravel truck and tractors on the farm. Not with any of my tacos. If you don’t use momentum to get through it’s never usually that crazy. I’ve helped a few guys out with the tacos though.

I’m not saying these will be good for every situation but for some they definitely are good enough. All recoveries aren’t created equal. I’m sure if I found myself buried up to the frame in mud one day I’d hook to the frame maybe. I’ll make the decision on the day. But likely not gonna happen. I want to get and install the 4WP low profile winch bumper but for now I’ll use what I have at my disposal when the situation warrants.

My last recovery was a Rubicon at the trailhead for Lost Knife in the Alberta Rockies. I used the hitch which can be a no-no. But it was on hard ground and the rubicon just needed a bit of help getting out of a rut. I think he wasn’t locked up. According to those charts that I shared before, it wasn’t much pull. I know this is a mild situation but I think I’d go up to 4000lbs comfortably. Using both shackles. And on those charts that’s towards the mid to higher end of scenarios. I’d judge on the day. Those charts will come in handy I think.

 

What if I use JB Weld in addition to the shackles? I’m glad I read 9 pages and am
not the wiser.

im going to assume if you drive hard enough to get yourself into a real sticky situation you have a winch and all the associates do dads. If you’re hitting some fire trails and get ballys and somehow get stuck in a rut these might serve you, but they also might explode your truck. I go out here and there and would live to have a winch, and all the best recovery gear, but for a lot of us weekend warriors it’s just not practical.

I think I’m going to buy some and hang double truck nuts. The nuts will stretch and will be a fail point in the recovery chain if the stress is too rough. Does anyone know where I can find some DD7? Need to brush my teeth!

3. Buy a quality aftermarket off road bumper for true off road recovery points.

Used it and a recovery strap to pop someone out of some mud so far. I would have been super hesitant to have done it with the factory hook.

It's on there until I get a high clearance bumper with recovery points. Hope to have to use it again.
