RSI Smart Cap

I placed the pads close in proximity to where the mounting bolts are. As you torque the bolts it’s just to prevent the metal from bowing and over tightening

Im confused how would rubber pads prevent bowing lol

The pads dont have through holes in them though ? Wouldn't the bolt need to be able to go through in your example?

They just get sandwiched between the plate and the bed rail and prevent over tightening

 

I placed the
Pads underneath the bolt hole and the pads were getting in the way. What I did find out that there should be a pad near the tailgate so the weather strip on the cap doesn’t go to low so you can still close the tailgate and not ruin the d gasket.

 

Anyone in here have a Gecko LED on their RSI cap? I just want to see how people wire their lights. Least difficulty as possible since I’m not mechanically inclined haha

 

The pads are actually stupid. The front and rear locations are gusseted so the rail won’t bend much but the center bolts if over tightened will bend the rail very easily. I put them in where they gave the most support and didn’t torque down the center bolts too tight to actually bend the rail. I also put rubber washers under the steel washers and that seem to help in making sure they stay locked down. The center hole location should’ve been gusseted and there should be aluminum shims that extend out to the bolt locations to support the tightening. Probably just another redesign they need to figure out.

 

Yeah I was getting worried that the metal was bending but seems no real damage has been done though.

 

It seems like Cement is the most popular color to have a cap installed here. We have a couple evo a's left and this Saturday Oct 16th is out of town install day if any are interested.

 

I’m also curious to see how people have wired lighting in their caps.

Also, anyone know what the threaded holes are for on the inside? I’m trying to figure out the best way use them in mounting a net.

 

Holes are for the table brackets.

 

Yeah I ordered from tnutz as well.
Id maybe go an inch longer. (1/2 inch longer on each side) to avoid hitting the doors
Its not higher than my cab rack. Its very close to making it level

 

I’ll plan on using vled strips most likely. Just will have to see best locations on/near the doors

 

I used rechargeable magnetic motion sensing LED lights I found on Amazon. They have a few different sizes depending on where you want to put them and how much light you need. They work pretty good and you can move them around as you need them. You do have to remember recharge them once in a while though. The motion sensing is nice, they turn on when I open the doors and shut off after a few seconds once I close the topper up.

I will still likely hardwire some lights down the road but these work really well for the money.

Magnetic Motion Sensing USB Rechargeable LED Lights on RSI SmartCap for 3rd Gen Tacoma

 

I am hoping that mine shows up soon. Ordered back in June. Question for those of you that have them, what is the width of the top? I see that 41~42 inch cross bars seem to be money! Trying to get a feeling for how much wider the top is than a 42 inch cross bar.

 

The front is wider than the rear so there’s that.

Install is actually easy but just requires running one of the wires all the way to the front. The instructions are easy to follow.
