Yeah my pops is up there working and sent me a picture. He was hopefully joking about getting winter tires and chains.

I told him to get some sandbags. Pretty sure the Nitro Terra Grappler G2s my uncle forced him to buy should handle Flagstaff snow well enough

    Yup, summer is definitely over.

I love the snow, I just wish people would learn to drive in it

Have a mid-rise and it does make a difference. I was able to hang shelving and it not be terribly in the way. Since we are discussing shortbed, you will absolutely have to sleep diagonal and so anything running along either side will stuff you back into the 5’ dimensions.

Head room isn’t too bad nor an issue because, well, you aren’t there to sit. It’s just a space to crawl into to stay warm and/or get some rest and requires 0 setup. Cheers!

Yeah the snow up here isnt that bad.

Only time people get in trouble is driving like they are still in phx

a couple sandbags in the bed right over the rear axle does wonders

Yeah I agree. I prefer to sleep under the stars but Ill retreat to the truck if the rain or snow gets to be too much for my bivy.
In that case I dont mind being a little cramped/cozy

My current set up is exactly this with a RTT. I have had the lowest end model smittybuilt RTT its been mounted on top of my truck for 2+ years now and for what I paid back then I can without a doubt tell you it is worth it

My biggest and only issue with my current setup is dust control. Recent week-long trip through SE UT solidified that there will be some changes coming, but the core setup will remain the same.

To each their own. Im glad it works out for you.

Even when I have the most free time im not camping more than a couple times a month.
For me its not worth the sacrifice of not being able to haul a dirt bike or whatever

I’ve been considering a Smittybuilt just because they are cheap. How do they compare to higher end soft shell RTT’s? I know they are all manufactured in the same Shenzhen factory but each company does have them built to their own specs, some better, some worse.

I had a no name RTT from a group buy here years ago and we’ve also had CVT. The CVT quality was much better and the customer service was amazing. When I broke the zipper on my no name RTT, the guy from CVT mailed me a replacement at no cost after reading my concern in a RTT thread. He didn’t have to, but he made an effort to help out someone who didn’t own his product. When I moved to AZ, I started using CVT. Got to check out the shop when vacationing in Oregon which was neat. Customer service and warranty is something to think about with these products. They show their age quickly because they are exposed to the elements.

I had a Smittybilt and now a Freespirit...the Smittybilt is a solid buy, but the Freespirit is a whole new level.

I prefer to buy once and cry once with gear but like it’s been said, these get exposed to the elements year round. I’m hoping a quality tent will last longer than a Smittybuilt. Otherwise, I could just buy a new Smittybuilt every year or two for less money. I’m big on details though and if a higher priced tent is going to last longer and provide a better use experience, then I’m all for it. I’m also not fond of my shit breaking in the middle of nowhere when I really need it so I’ll be researching this until my eyes bleed before I make my purchase.

I've done the same thing with everything else truck related like suspension and so on but this smitty built has taken a ton of abuse and literally being in the Arizona sun for longer than two years straight. Its defiantly worn at this point but there's nothing broken. It is a barebones tent there's no extra cool features but it stays dry in the rain, stays up in strong winds, keeps dust out, and open and closes when I want it to. When this tent finally gives in ill be upgrading to something with more features but as a first RTT it was perfect for me

My CVT Mt Hood has been great. As said before I went CVT for any warranty support because they have the branch in Vegas now. So localish support in a way. Especially since I live in N AZ

Stuff that costs more than my wife thinks.
As someone looking at the lower-end Smitty's just looking for something to put over my shortbed for trips with the dog - I appreciate the honest rundown! I'm just looking for something that I can sleep in and (maybe) the wife - but I've also go a larger tent for those trips, too.

Are you asking about eating tacos for breakfast or putting breakfast food in a taco?

I would enjoy both. I actually prefer breakfast for dinner though.
