Do people actually run air tools on the trail any more? So much easier and cheaper to just use cordless. I have a tank and the best it's good for is filling up my bicycle tire without starting the truck if it's already filled. If you have a tiny small manifold tank that the compressor charges, and the lockers run off that, it's all you need. I have ARB front and rear and they have been a bit of a pain. When they work it's awesome, but when they don't it's frustrating. I had solenoids go 3 times due to oil coming up the line from the rear diff. I haven't had a problem since putting an oil separator at the solenoid though

 

Good to know. Guess I'm gonna have to do my homework. Yeah I don't have much for powertools at the moment, but I've got air grinder, and air wrenches. You're probably right though, not worth the hassle. I just want a selectable locker that is reliable. I've heard mixed reviews on either side of the spectrum. Since it's a daily, I don't want to run a lunchbox or other non-selectable locker.

 

Yeah both have their pros and cons for sure. I love the Arbs when they work, which has been trouble free for a bit now knock on wood.

I find that unless you got a crazy good compressor, you'll run out of air so fast that the tools are basically useless anyway

And radios. That would've been good too. I'm considering GMRS. Does your Baofeng transmit on those frequencies or is it just HAM? I'm not familiar with them and I know we talked about it a while back, but.... My memory is like a steel sieve. Only bits and pieces stick.

 

get a cheap handheld ham radio AND a 50+ watt unit in the truck. 110w is what racers use.

You are able to write blank checks, but we pinch pennies for this stuff sadly. Right now I got issues at work holding me back from getting any OT and I don't know when it'll clear up.

I could be wrong, but here is what I can recall:

CB = 26.965 to 27.405 Mhz up to 4 watts (comparing wattage isn't apples to apples because the frequencies are so different from HAM) good for stuff you don't have line of sight of or are at longer distances. Has a tendency to have static and prone to interference. No license required.

HAM = UHF and VHF. My Baofengs are dual band, so can do both. Dual band radios will have the GMRS and FRS channels that most people would be using at races and the like. This tends to either work, or not, no real in between from my experience. You have the benefit of emergency info channels, weather station radio signals, and a worldwide network of repeaters you can use if you know what you're doing, coast guard and maritime channels, yada yada, the list goes on. But that's because it's "HAM" radio and it's highly regulated on an international level.

There are a crapload of "digital" channels and privacy tones that are usefull for groups in the same area, but doesn't work super great out of line of sight. Transmit up to 5 watts without a lisence on FRS channles but to be useful and legal, you would ABSOLUTELY get a GMRS license and mount a 50w unit in the cab.

I'm not opposed to CB, but right now it's a transition where it's better to have both.

I don't remember it taking much of a hit. Is there an impact location somewhere on the arm?

 

I don't see any impact spots. just wondered if maybe I tweaked the arm or my alignment. I'll be going in for an alignment probably this weekend anyway since my new SPC joints should be in today.

As far as radios go, I'll probably upgrade to a newer CB and add a GMRS or HAM or some kind of multi-function. Just need something I can contact on the trail + whatever basecamp should there be one. Right now, CB is what KRRP uses for the basecamp scenario.

Something like that, yeah. That seems pricey, but I haven't heard of Rugged before.

 

Rugged makes race radios for things like Baja and Mint and also SxS racing. PCI is similar.

Also not sure what keeps happening, but randomly I think the front passenger brakes catch/stick or something is going on at highway speed on corners when I tap the brakes. It feels like I hit a patch of ice on that wheel, or like I lost a balljoint for a split second. It's pretty sketchy feeling but then it's immediately fine again and I have no idea what's causing it. Maybe I need a wider tire? Maybe my brakes are catching? Maybe my Wheel bearing is catching? I can't for the life of me figure it out. Need to put it on a jack and cycle the tires and see if maybe +5* caster is catching on something with the wheel is at slight stuff when cornering. I doubt it, but like weirder things have happened right? Also Firestone bent my cam tabs to achieve that 5* of caster so I get to keep on eye on that.... Maybe I should just bite the bullet and weld on those marlin gussets....

When it happens this last time, my trac was off because of the CEL for the gas cap, but the little icon that flashes for loss of traction was flashing.

 

A quick bout of google research shows: Too much caster can lead to lower contact patch when cornering which can cause the wheel to slip or lose traction in turns. Guess I found my issue...
