Unless and until the government steps completely out of space exploration/exploitation we’ll still get not further on manned flights than earth orbit.

 

What about funding???

No NASA, no SpaceX.

Greed is the best way to get investors. To actually accomplish anything you need someone who is actually motivated by something more. Boeing was created through greed, blue origin was created through greed. And that greed without motivation is killing both companies because greed alone is not enough. But when you have a dream, and sell it to investors, you may actually accomplish it, but then the fight is in keeping it alive. And continuing that dream once the original dreamer is gone is even harder, which I think is why Elon has said he wants to push space as hard as he can while he can.

 

I agree something more is needed. Boeing is just reaching the end of its life. Have you ever heard the life cycle of a company.

Started by a visionary. Then they hire business men to grow and increase profits. Of course it looses money so they hire accountants to get them back in the black. The accountants fire the knowledgeable and experienced staff. Now the company is on its last legs they hire lawyers who drive the company into bankruptcy killing it.

Blue Origin never had a visionary. Then again the government agencies never had them either.

Governments can sustain efforts that would crush any company or make the payoff so distant as to be not worth the effort. Greed alone won’t get you there, the carrot has to be within reach. We would not even have an air industry this robust without government funded research/contracts. NEO is now the domain of commercial industry but it didn’t start that way and any further out won’t be until competition at a higher level, meaning governments, makes it possible to develop the technology and industrial infrastructure to sustain it along with a sufficient carrot to be had. Right now the carrot is government contracts. Finding either resources or processes that cannot be found or accomplished in our gravity well isn’t guaranteed. Once found the greed will find its wolves. Prepositioned asteroid defense missiles with greater range due to a lower escape velocity would be one reason for maintaining lunar bases at the poles but that’s still a military application and pure research as is done on the ISS is well beyond any privately funded institution even now and more so if the moon is the location of the habitat.
