Pitman, which has 9,365 residents and is about 17 miles southeast of Philadelphia, is home to one of Sony's two remaining U.S.-based CD-manufacturing plants--until March 31. After that, the company will shutter the facility and 300 workers will be out of jobs. A Sony spokeswoman recently cited an ailing U.S. economy and sagging interest in physical media as the reasons for the closure. A longtime employee sized up the situation more succinctly for CNET last week: "The CD is dying."

    I don't think I have purchased a cd in 8 yrs?

CD's will be history, like the LP record, in the near future.

Even quicker than DAT? Another failure from Sony right behind betamax.

i still buy cd's on a regular basis, I refuse to buy anything off of I-tunes for the simple reason that if I am going to purchase something, I want the physical cd, not just something on my computer that is probably going to eat itself on a bi-yearly basis.

And I am a 26 year old highly tech-savy person, in case someone was going to accuse me of being old and stuck in my ways

My old computer recently had to be replaced due to the motherboard going out. I took the H.D. out of it and use it for backup now. I use to use Carbonite and Mozy.
