I may be wrong but l think he was saying the access cab would not have the clamshell door anymore but a stubby regular door instead.

I like the clamshell doors better as it was easier to fit bulky items into the back.

While true, I'm assuming this means the AC cab will be larger and possibly have actual back seats, if they're putting in normal rear doors.

That has a bit of a new Nissan Frontier vibe going.

Yeah that's a good question if it will have a regular rear seat or continue with jump seats.

Isn't that a double cab though? No way you can shorten the dc and have a real seat back there.

Honestly I don't mind the new Tundra looks anymore. My biggest gripe with the thing so far is that there's no factory Aux switch bank in the TRD models. Or maybe it'll be an option when it's finally released..

Either way I like the styling, I like the Access Cab and I hope it retains the suicide doors but it's unlikely. As for the engine it's hard to say what they'll do. They could run a 3.5l single turbo or they could run a 2.4l turbo but I doubt it would be both. However it would be interesting to see a 'Performance' version of the 4th gen tacoma running the 3.5l with a twin turbo pushing some decent numbers for desert running. Something to compare to the Raptor ranger.

But as for the diesel. I think thats a far cry from ever happening. I feel we have a better chance of getting a Hydrogen Fuel Cell instead, given that they're trying to take a more renewable path. A hybrid is possible but I don't think we will see that in the Tacoma in the 4th gen.

Can a turbo 4 do 6000 lb ++ towing? I would agree for economics they go to a 4, but according to sweers he wants toyota customers not to sweat while towing.
I feel that way now lol with my 6 towing 4 000 lbs long distances.

Wow, it's been a very sleepless night/morning. Had wanted to reply sooner (1 day ago) and then this night, I made a longer than expected airport run and ended up getting back very late. I was on my way back from DTW to drop off 2 friends (live 7 minutes away from me), which is 40 mins away unfortunately. Here I am 4-5 hrs later.

    20211014_002201.jpg
Thanks. Great memory BTW, I didn't recall that in fact. It's hard to know, because the trademark could be for almost anything unfortunately. Toyota for new models typically files trademark 2-3 years out, but for trim level stuff it could be about 1 year to 1.5 years.

It could easily be a concept car or it indeed a 2023 Tacoma trim level as a swan song. Or is it a new trim level for the 2024 vehicle? Stuff like MY 2023 specifics are such inside knowledge, I can't know it all 100% unless someone in marketing discusses it and that never happens for me LOL. Only engineers, suppliers, technicians/etc, or sales personnel are my personal go-tos. Marketing folks, not so much.

Sorry, I forgot to highlight specific text in that post (I updated it in bold).

I was referring to your idea, that early renderings of the 2022 Tundra were even "pretty good". I disagreed, because they were misleading in the worst sense and unfortunately with Toyota, you are not going to know much on that level ever (if Japanese media won't cover the model and garner secret info).

My own curiosity some 2 years back on the '22 Tundra design, was disappointed in DOA renderings that were terribly lazy or woefully uninspired. Only 1 or 2 renderings were quality predictions, being almost as if they knew about some actual details from insider whispering, but executed them poorly in basing it too much on the old truck and it being hard to do with only 25% info. The rest were awful and clickbait BS.

    2022-Toyota-Tundra-Carscoops-Copyright.jpg

This April 2020 rendering looked nothing like the actual truck, but oddly enough a few of the cues had to have been based on a rough description of the real truck at least. The artist Josh Byrnes is really good at what he does and often predicts future models with great accuracy, but with the Tundra he couldn't even meet 50% accuracy. He was sadly the best guess pre-leak (November 2020).

    2022-Toyota-Tundra-Leaked-Image-1.jpg

After that October 2020 dealer video conference leak (ie DOMINATING SOON) and 3/4 photo of a TMMTX trial build being leaked deliberately by Toyota , "artists" still couldn't get with the program and STILL put out joke-worthy renderings, worse than paintings by Stevie Wonder. They just missed the obvious anyway, until Toyota went semi-official in June. It was such a great joke, as if no one had seen the same photo.

Clearly, unless Toyo staff from CALTY, Plano, or Detroit violate their NDAs, no one is gonna know what this thing looks like for 2 years, save for a dealer meeting or consumer clinic leak. I said what I did in response to you days ago, because 95% of those Tundra renderings don't deserve any props for their BS efforts.

Yeah, this is strictly mechanical as you stated and probably the only worthy discussion right now, which most of us are having.

There is nothing 3G about this mule though, unlike this was back in the day.

The complex differences between TNGA-F and the currently outdated Land Cruiser 150 basis for the 3G Tacoma, I guess have warranted Toyota's entire use of a chopped up 2022 Tundra Double Cab, covered up in camouflage to the next one.

The differences are that much, they're not even bothering with using the 3rd gen for mules.

Easier to chop up a new Tundra, then weld it back together on the Tacoma sized version of TNGA-F, while they work on hand assembly of the Tacoma sheetmetal and procuring parts for it.

That should be ready end of this year or by early spring at latest for internal testing use, depending on how long it takes for them (month wise) to go from design freeze to first unitized verification prototype builds. Typically it's 36-40 weeks from my own knowledge and experience.

Some do it faster, many struggle and take longer than 6 months. Somewhere there are two or more examples of a clay or fiberglass design buck of the new 2024 truck, in Ann Arbor, MI and in Japan.

LOL It's way too late, as I think that should've been voiced roughly 1 year ago, when these leaked via video.

    Screen-Shot-2020-11-20-at-8.05.05-PM-copy-740x525.jpg
    Screen-Shot-2020-11-20-at-8.04.52-PM-copy-740x462.jpg
    121127699.jpg

According Toyota Design's USA chief Kevin Hunter (above, guy #4)), they've already locked down the 2024 Tacoma design months ago and it's permanent going forward, which is why we're seeing these mules now. Next step is just to finish prototype bodies of the real thing over the next several months, then test, test, test until 2023.

Yep, Toyota's plan to trick folks didn't work. Did their very best to make the mules look like a Tundra Double Cab as much as possible, but everyone has figured otherwise out very quickly. Going to be a long 2 years of seeing these test.

Wish TFL didn't always play obtuse, as they have a lot more going on for them than other channels and often miss the obvious. Why do they keep calling it a 2023, when if they dug deeper, they'd find it not to be the case?

It's bad enough this probably won't hit dealers until February 2024 at best, so anyone claiming 2023MY is kidding themselves. Anymore delays between now and 2023, then it's even a 2025 model for sure.

Sh*t happens as we can see, since the 4th generation truck has suffered a new 4 month delay from September/Oct 2023 to late Jan/February 2024.

Indeed. It's just a shortened Tundra slapped on the new Tacoma. The only second mule iteration, is a unit wearing the production front and/or rear, on the same shortened Tundra cab.

After that, it will be the real thing testing, but I've learned not to expect those. As depending on Toyota's mood, might not even see those final bodies in camo running about until a few months before reveal (whenever that is).

And that makes plenty of sense, since the business case is gone now.

I'm sure the Tacoma will be a sharp looking truck. I have no doubt of that. My concern is that it will have coil springs, in which case I will not be able to add a leaf or two to make it handle a load properly. Also, I suspect it will have rear disc brakes that will have to be maintained regularly unlike drum brakes which last 10 years without concern. It will have all kinds of stupid gadgets and safety sensors and beepers that wail when I don't behave. I really hope it doesn't have that torque robbing Atkinson cycle that they have on the 2GR motor. Ultimately, I wish I could have the 1GR 4L but sadly I know that's unrealistic. I'm sure the 4 banger turbo will prove to be epic in it's own right, eventually giving way to the E-Tacoma.

You can add higher rate coils or airbags for extra load.

My only experience with a coil spring truck is with a clients dodge limited. We used his truck to haul the load of timbers to his place.( the client was local and insisted I use his "big dodge") I drove it and remembered thinking... what the fuck is wrong with this truck? I asked the guy why the truck was so wishy washy. He said it has coil springs and that's the way they are. My Tacoma might be smaller but it's way more solid that this POS.

The NASCAR "Tundra" gives us a bit of a look at a less-vertical version of that Tundra nose. I would not be surprised if the 4th gen Tacoma looks a lot like this as far as grill proportions go.
