Well I don't recall hearing that before. WAAF was spotty where I lived but I did listen to it when I was in a better area (I was more of a BCN fan if I'm being totally honest). As for the band I get the reference to Getty but the band is nowhere near Rush!

Totally agreed......I really do not think that any band can be like Rush. They were so far ahead of their time in so many ways and the coming together of such a unique set of talented members that will never be duplicated. Coheed and Cambria has a likeness in a small way with the lead singers voice but no one can come up with a lyric like Getty Lee.

Seeing a bunch of emo looking kids singing along to the "woah oh" of this was hilarious circa 2004:

The last half of this song has been stuck in my head for years.

I always thought they did a great job of mixing pop songs with less pop songs. I've always been too much of a sucker for a hook to be a real music snob. Even when I was into my most "no radio, ever" phase, I still needed a catchy chorus or I checked out.

Its funny, ive been getting the ending of three evils on loop stuck in my head recently and now this conversation happens lol. I'm at a point in my life where I understand that a solid hook will always be better than any other aspect of the song be it a vocal or instrumental melody. High school me would be very upset haha

Yeah...I'm back into borderline pop stuff these days. High school me was pop punk to the max with Blink, NFG, Midtown, The Ataris, The Starting Line, etc. Then college hit and I went into the emo/screamo with Finch, Story of the Year, Taking Back Sunday, early Brand New, Senses Fail, The Early November, etc. As college went on and I the dating stuff didn't pan out as I hoped I went into the Thursday, Thrice, Coheed, From Autumn to Ashes, Atreyu, Underoath, etc. By the end of college I was crawling back out of it and falling back into poppier stuff. Lately I've been on a pseudo electronic kick mixed with "older punk" bands that aren't just whining about girls (Menzingers, Spanish Love Songs, Iron Chic, etc). Though I realize the irony of listening to some of that because they're talking about being lost, alone, poor, etc, and I'm like...fully with a family and properly adulting.

Trying to stay relevant, but I need a good beat and a good hook or I'm out.

I basically started with your college bands in high school and devolved into heavier and heavier music as I got into my 20s haha, lots of metalcore, prog, eventually djent bands like periphery and tesseract, spent a good couple years on an instrumental music kick, realized its always been about the catchy hook and just kind of teeter between my mainstay music and some newer stuff I dig. I don't go through nearly as much music as I used to but I feel like I appreciate everything I hear more now

My friend is HUGE into those bands...I really dig It's Only Smiles, but he'll send me stuff like Wage War and ERRA and I'm trying to find something I like out of it. I probably would have liked it in high school pre-pop punk Mike. Like Wage War's Who I Am has a good chorus, but I just can't do the growling / screaming choruses like I could 15 years ago. That being said Jinjer is hilarious. That lead me into Unleash the Archers, Nanowar of Steel, etc on the related videos which was entertaining, but not something I'd listen to on the regular.

Erra's new album is one that's found its way into regular rotation for me, i liked it way more than I thought I would. Recently found out about wage war and I dig em but it's the same thing where its just not doing it for me. You should check out loathe, they do the screaming/singing chorus thing but there are a couple songs on their new album that are mostly singing that are suuuuuper catchy (to me at least haha)

With all this music talk, and the variety of skills around here. I think it would be a fun idea, if there were time, to do a little talent show at the next meet up. Or maybe even do a different event, maybe a fund raiser for the toys for tots or the same group as the meet up is for. Anyways, it'd be alot of work so I understand if there isn't much enthusiasm for it

Anyone play a guitar here? I’ve been kicking around the thought of taking it up and started to look for a guitar. Stopped into a local shop and liked the size and tone of a PRS SE P20 parlor acoustic. Any thoughts on something a bit less expensive? Recommendations on type, etc? Leaning toward an acoustic-electric if I can find one that I like. Any pointers would be appreciated.

What ideally are you looking to spend? The somewhat standard acoustic guitar for beginners would be the Yamaha FG700 or FG800 (you can get them with pickups installed). They are workhorses for the price you can get them at. When I pick one up and play it, I am still blown away they are around $250. I have a few guitars that are too damn expensive, but I still like to gravitate towards my cheaper wall hangers to play.

Two quick pieces of advice: make sure you're using a metronome and have fun! You have to put your time in and practice scales to get your finger dexterity down, but always have a constant click going to be in time. You can play awful chords and wrong notes all over the place, but if you're in time it is much more enjoyable.
