    Hey everyone,

Ive been dealing with the secondary air injection system failure for about a month now.

The RECALL for Tacomas is out!

    Symptoms:

    1. Not hearing secondary air pump whining on startup
    2. Engine and track light on
    3. Loss of power due to limp mode
    4. Codes P2440 and P2442
    5. Quotation of $2,700.00 to fix

I'm in Canada, I know the Tundras have had a RECALL already out but the Tacomas didn't until about 1 month ago.

    I have a 2012 Tacoma 4L V6, TRD Off-road.

Unfortunately the system doesn't get completely removed, but it's better than having to clean the pump and bloody valves.

When I pickup the truck I'll post the actual RECALL for reference.

    Finally!

If this is true, then the extended warranty issued a few months ago is far better. The system (valves and pump) are completely removed and replaced under the extended warranty.

Unless what you meant to say is that the extended warranty now applies to Canada??

If they completely remove the system it would be even better. But it sounds like they just replace with new, and hopefully not with 2012 part batches.

Apparently this recall (10 year extended warranty) is pretty new in Canada, even the dealership was surprised.
I spent a long time researching solutions and delete mods were the only good alternative.

So I hope this helps some other Canadians dealing with this ridiculous system!

Just to clarify, it’s a warranty extension not a recall. Difference being - with a recall, if you have the affected parts, you bring it in for replacement free of charge; regardless if they’ve failed or not.

With a warranty extension, you have to have the affected parts AND they have to fail for them to be replaced for free.

At any rate, it’s about time Canada gets some coverage on this!

New to this forum but following a long time. Had this same problem in Canada on my system and found the American Recall number. Called the service dept and they said there was none and didn't care to look into it either. I called Toyota Canada and had a helpful lady on the other end, within 10 mins had found the Warrant Extension number n Canada. She was also Surprised that the Dealer couldn't find it. Told me to call back and Give the number "W28" to them. They found it and booked it in as they needed to look and confirm first. As I have a code reader an knew the P2440/P2442 codes had already been thrown and in limp mode, I wasn't to worried. They checked it out and changed the whole system free of charge under warranty even though the truck was past original warranty. Wanted to post this to hopefully save some others some money. Also the new air pump has a cover over top of it to prevent water going in it from what i can see.

Wow, Thank you so much!! Just saved me $800. I had been fighting the trac light going on and off then the engine light came on. Sure enough, secondary air injection system failed. Heading for toyota tomorrow. I will be forever grateful for this post. Thanks again all.

Hey did anyone ever get that repaired under an extended warranty or recall in Canada, I could only find it for American Vins, does anyone have the Canadian info. as my whole system in my 2013 is failed with p2442/ p2445 and p2440 codes. So both valve stuck open bank codes and Pump stuck and neither Dealerships nor toyota canada say they will or have to do anything about it, and that the extended warranty only applies to american vehicles.

ON that note. I have been a loyal Toyota person for almost 20 years, owned a used older 4runner. then had a new 4runner, then bought my Tacoma new. But after this insane run around and nightmare while my truck is barely operable and it's a problem Toyota knows about and has admitted to, but only on american vins I won't be buying a toyota in canada ever again. And I am going to Make tik toks and youtube videos Exposing toyotas greedy bs due to bad engineering where they want to charge you $3000 to fix an issues they are at 100% fault for. It's an absolute nightmare and an absolute joke that toyota is treating it like this. Especially since they have had these issues in 2007-2011 models as well, like wtf.

This was never a recall, it was a customer satisfaction program/extended warranty on the SAIS system components only for 2012 4.0L Tacoma's lasting 10 years from date of first use.
The system was updated in 2013 to address the issue 2012 trucks had, do they still fail? Yes but not nearly as often as the 2012s.

$3000 seems exessive though even if the whole system needs to be replaced which typically isn't the case.

No manufacturer is going to warranty parts on a 10 year old truck, every so often there is an exception when something is determined to be a pattern failure and the manufacturer wants to keep customers happy or something is determined to be a safety issue and has to be done as a recall but things being fixed after the factory warranty expires is typically on the customer.

Manufacturers are kinda at the mercy of the EPA, if they want to sell vehicles in the US (or any country with emissions regulations) they have to meet emissions standards that are set forth. To do that they have to add systems that are very difficult to make reliable, the diesel vehicles have it even worse with all the unreliable emissions systems forced on them and they don't just go into limp mode they give you x miles (typically <200mi or <2hrs in the case of offroad equipment) to resolve the issue or they start limiting speed and power until eventually they go to idle only and in some cases will no longer restart until the problem is fixed and system operation is verified.
I don't agree with it but that is what we are currently stuck with and it doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon.

All that being said if you need assistance diagnosing and fixing the system there's quite a few knowledgeable people on here that would be happy to help.

Does anyone know if Toyota would honor the recall if a bypass kit was installed? I installed it before the recall was issued, and my truck has been running without issues ever since. However, if I moved to a state with emissions testing, it probably wouldn't pass. Just curious.

You would almost certainly need to return it to stock for them to honor any kind of warranty.

Your likely out of the warranty period of 10 years anyway as this was an extended warranty not a recall, see my post #9 above.

Depends what kind of emissions inspection your area has as to weather or not it would get flagged.
