3rd Gen Center console switch panel mod

Hey everyone!


Ive been doing a lot of little projects on my '21 OR Taco! It has been pretty awesome to learn how to do everything from electrical to welding etc. As far as this mod goes:

Ive been wanting to get rid of that freaking wireless charger out of my center console as I don't use it and I've heard/ read a lot of issues with bubbling etc.

So originally, I installed a keyed kill switch and switch on the left driver control panel. for my rear bed rack pod lights. Pic below:



Once I started adding more accessories (ditch lights, more pods, VHF-- more to follow) I wanted to have a centralized location for all of my switches/ accessories.

I bought a 6 gang switch panel (here)

Im not a complete fan of the quality of the plastic or the carbon fiber look but this was my test run.

I ended up having to do a lot of cutting, adjusting and making a bracket/ faceplate for the switch panel




So far, its ran pretty nicely. I will try and post more photos tomorrow when its light out but here are some photos of the wiring and panel.



I ran conduit from the firewall on the drivers side in the engine well. I used two L brackets to mount a separate fuse box that all of my accessories will go on to. This is so that I can keep my aftermarket things separate and also will be able to control when power is ran to them. Just extra and redundancy that is probably not needed but hey ‍♂️ I enjoy it.

I gotta clean it up some, and have been doing some more stuff but man. doing this project was so much fun! learning how to use all these new tools and get this stuff done for actual use rather than some useless charger! love it!!

 

Agree with your thinking on an independent electrical grid for mods, given the many Taco electrical idiosyncrasies I read about.
Have been pondering the same concept - oversize (as appropriate) conduit thru firewall AND to the rear of the bed. Maintain pull strings in both to facilitate running wire for new devices.
Good job on the panel. I would miss that potential storage cubby however.
So far my mods are simple and inconsequential.

It’s been a fun project! Making your taco, or any other thing yours feels great.
I’ll always run an extra wire through so I can use it as a pull string or even as a repair in a pinch if something fries etc. so it’s a great idea! To have that pull string!
