80 IN OVERDRIVE!!!

Just upgraded SR5 Tacoma 6cyl
3.5 rough country suspension kit
20” moto metal razors wheels
33” nitto grapplers

When I get on the Interstate 95 to be exact, seems like my wheels and tires are to heavy. When I try and go over 80 mph the truck automatically dumps into 4 gear and try’s to ride at higher RPM’s. It’s like 80 is the sweet spot for 5 gear. Has anyone else have this problem before?

 

Yeah, the gearing sucks. You either need more power or to re-gear the differentials or both.

 

Maybe the term modified would be more accurate?

Part of the problem, but the change in your effective gear ratio with the taller tire package is a culprit too.

Yes, that's why it's called an automatic. It tries to deliver what your right foot is asking for.

Or it may be a nanny control, since there are no 80+ limits on I95 I'm aware of.

Of course they have. W/o changing what you've already done, regearing is the answer you seek.

 

And how expensive is re gearing? Is this something that can really be done?

Re gearing can definitely be done, many many many trucks on here have had it. You just need to make sure you put the same gear ratio in both front and rear diffs.

 

$3000-4000 for re-gear by a reputable shop out the door. If you pull the differentials and take them to a shop you will save a few hundred. Another option is to buy built diffs from ECGS.com and send your originals back as cores.

 

Your new wheel/tire combo is about 110lbs vs your stock setup of about 59lbs. So yes the will make acceleration slower combined with the increased tire height.

Also, if you are going off of your speedometer and haven't recalibrated it. You're going 93 not 80.

 

As stated above. Regear is the answer your looking for.
And this is a case of you gotta pay if you wana play. Regearing isn’t exactly cheap

@jddavenport26 here's a suggestion. Before dropping a wad on things like suspension, tires & wheels, spend some time doing research on the pros and cons of the components you're considering.
