Yes, anything is possible, a deposit on a 'temp VIN' vehicle is not a contract. Either party could walk away, presumably, as long as the deposit is returned.

I will say that a salesperson doesn't have much to gain by taking a deposit, if his or her ultimate intent is to sell to the highest bidder. They want to make a sale--pissing off a buyer, losing the sale, and then potentially losing the commission to another salesperson isn't a great strategy.

Salespeople want to make money. I can imagine scenarios where they might screw over a buyer, but most often I expect they just wouldn't want to take the deposit if they thought they could get a better price.

Just a thought....one thing you may want to mention to your salesperson, if you haven't already, is to make sure you don't end up with a bunch of overpriced port, distributor, or dealer installed "options" you don't want that will just end up inflating your price, like $399 carpeted floor mats, a $73 cable package, etc.

He technically only reserved the truck with a deposit immediately. This is no different than how I bought mine with a $500 deposit on my credit/debit card. We had an agreement on the sales price and I knew what all the taxes and fees would be when it came in before putting down the deposit. They emailed it all to me. When the truck came all the Actual sales contracts were done per the agreements previously made, I wrote my check for the rest of my down payment then completed the finance and registration. I drove home happy. I never set foot in that dealership before the day my truck came in either so it's very possible it will go just fine the for the OP as it did for me. This seems to be how business gets done these days.

Mine was similar. The truck had been built but not shipped. We agreed on price, I put $500 on a card, and when the truck arrived they called me before it was even prepped.

Same mine was in the cleaning and detail bay when I arrived. They even took me back there to see it to make sure it was what I expected. Bill Kidds Toyota was who I dealt with. They were far easier to work with than going to York Toyota in person, where I couldn't to run from their place fast enough.

True story. Modifications and add ons, big and small await. The OP THINKS that he got everything he wanted in the order, but wait until he decides he needs, glove box, console, and underseat organizers. Then the bed mat, then the tailgate lock, then the cell phone holder, then extra USB ports, then... It never stops.

My wife told me to buy any accessories that I wanted and not to worry about the money.

Oh Yeah It was a few months before the pandemic (nov '19) I went in to look at a Tacoma and test drive one. Made it clear I was still looking at other makes and it wasn't a buying decision day. They piled on the pressure, wanted MSRP for a 19 leftover, wanted me to pay for nitrogen tires ($200) door edge guards and more silly stuff. Made up some phoney story about the transmission failing on my trade so they could low ball me by a lot. tried to say they couldn't find my keys when I said I was leaving now. I'm sure they play whatever crooked games they feel like with people after that experience. I won't go back for service now either as I've heard things about the service department too.

I've had my Truck back to Bill kidd's and to Hanover Toyota once for the maintenance services, I was happy with both.

I'm living that service department nightmare right now. I made the mistake of letting them do the third brake light recall. I have to bring it back on Monday to let them fix the stuff the messed up when they had it for over 3 weeks doing the initial repair....Thankfully I didn't buy my truck there.

Congrats on the truck, but I would have to agree that you shouldn't celebrate too much until you actually drive the truck off the lot. There are more than a few people here who have done the same as you just to be outbid when the truck actually hit the dealer lot. With inventory at 0, it's crazy enough trying to get an auto Tacoma in white let alone the config you found. If you haven't agreed upon a price and sale in a legally binding contract, the truck is still fair game to the highest bidder. Good luck though and I hope it all works out.

they did the frame recall treatment on my dad's 2011. they had the stuff everywhere. had it for 2 days and gave him a loaner that broke down on him. He thinks he has to go there because it's the most local dealership, don't ask why?

The "Can't find your keys" BS is as old as the car business. Even back in the pre Internet days of the 1980s, books on car buying warned about that. They'll always try to low ball a trade in, so be prepared.

Of course. they are trying to stall you so they have more time to wear you down in hopes you will buy before you walk out. The lower they get your trade for the more they can make on it. They also count on people not knowing a lot about cars or their car and believing what they are told.

In general, they make a bigger margin on used cars than new. Especially if they can flip it to a wholesaler quickly. It's the same dynamic if you trade in a gun on a new one. Of course, selling a gun yourself is a lot easier than selling a car yourself. At least in most cases.

I've done both. I hate selling cars but last time was good. I sold that Jeep in a week on Facebook marketplace in a week for almost full asking price.
