wait a second. did he put down logs in an unsafe manner for the riders? becuase i've seen that behavior. that's just straight up malicious...but if he's blocking off the entrance with logs, that's another thing entirely.

We're talking about pirate trails, right?

Maybe I'm the odd one out, but I completely understand why people are upset about those on public land.

What a shit bag. No idea of the history of the area, the amount of work people put in, how trails are built correctly (it’s fair to say some in LHOHV are not), what the area means to people, or how that behavior is not just pretentious but dangerous. Thanks for your service Trail Marshall Tom, but I’ll nicely invite you to go hike any one of the hundreds of trails in the area that will suit your desires.

Yea it’s pretty cool. There are a bunch of cool trail markers out there.

I think maliciously. Buddy of mine rode it backwards (not easy, basically hike) and cleared the logs. Doing the work of the people!

meh yes on public land but this area was a designated OHV area before some flood damage destroyed the access points. Lots of moto trails got converted to mtb trails and then some were added so it’s not like it was pristine untouched Forrest. Also a lot of area is burn scar.

DLR is also probably one of the best built trails out there from a sustainability standpoint. Not sure why this guy is Ranger Rick about this area but agree it’s super dangerous to be setting up traps. Wait until he finds out what the OHVers have planned! He will begging for it to be mtb/hike only.

damn. if he just put logs at the entrances to kinda make it harder to find then that's one thing. but malicious work is just downright hazardous. f* him.

Yea the proper way to handle this is to speak to the land manager and see if it is a problem for them. To unilaterally decide that a trail isn’t built to your standards therefore it must be destroyed without speaking to anyone is a good way to get your ass kicked.

Exactly. That area was torn to pieces when it was open to OHV use. Mountain bikers went in, and over many years cleaned things out, built trails, improved access, and made the area a bit of a MTB mecca for anyone looking for harder, not dumbed down trails. For many years there were maybe 50 people who rode it because access to the upper trails required some serious climbing, and less that half that who hiked it. In the last three years the place blew up, now there're lots more people who access the area, including hikers, who never knew it existed. That means some brought shovels, and more "pirate" trails popped up. USFS is, and was, fully aware of what was happening, but decided to let it be to see how it went. That was a battle, and a lot of bikers had to speak up for access.
The thing with hikers now is that they just started to use the area A LOT more than in the past. They have (literally) countless options in the area where there are no MTB trails. They typically come with dogs, off-leash of course, and these trails are definitely NOT built for hiking, other than the access road. This guy is hiking a trail that was built by, and for, mountain bikers. Hiking up or down that trail and many others in the area would not only be difficult, but totally mess it up.
I'm all for shared access, I love hiking and taking my dog along. But taking a shit on someone's front lawn and complaining that they didn't leave you a toilet and TP isn't a good way to talk about access.

Anyone used a Corona brand McLeod rake?

I'm starting a few trails at my new property. Looking to buy a McLeod rake but not break the bank. I also don't want one I'll break or regret buying.

The Corona one I've found is the right price and looks decent enough but I was hoping some of you other trailbuilders may have some insight.

Interestingly they made 2 of them. This one is owned by pivot who made both of them, and the other is with PB for testing and all that.

I've come across that. I know you get what you pay for but these are all about double the price. Not looking to spend that much for fairly casual use. I'll stick to the tools that I have before I spend that much cash.

They all look good but a bit overkill for my purpose.

I don't need it to be "bomber" just enough to shape a short backyard trail system.

Got a couple variants of their stuff that I’ve had for at least 9 or 10 years with many work days of use. Good tools and made in Cabool, MO is a bonus (at least they used to be). Only advice is to keep the edge sharp, if you let it go too far it’s a lot work to get back. The steel is super hardened, repurposed ag discs or something like that but you prob already knew all that.

Does anyone know of stores that actually sell a McLeod in-store? I've been into 5 different hardware stores here (Lowe's, Home Depot, Menard's, Ace Hardware, and Runnings) and selections ranged from "not much beyond basic yard tools" to "literally everything but a McLeod." I'd rather walk into a store and buy one than order something like that online.

Thats cool and I did not know that.

I have never seen a Mcleod in stock anywhere! The shipping on them is outrageous or just outrageous to me because I'm cheap.

Home Depot has one but comes with a very crappy handle according to the reviews.
