You should call your local trail org to see if they have the hookup on prices. I'm waiting on a response from mine.

 

Looking for some suggestions for a full squish mtb that pedals well uphill but also tears it up on the DH.

Currently have a 2021 slash 9.8 and it's a dope bike and is an absolute beast on the DH, but is kind of a bear to pedal uphill where a lot of the hills around where I live are pretty steep. (180/170 travel f/r)

I'm thinking I need more of a trail oriented bike in order to get more miles and climbing in on a ride, whereas right now I feel pretty whooped after about 7.5mi w/ 2k ft climbing.

I've heard amazing things about the pivot switchblade which I'm currently looking at. Great on the uphill and a super versatile bike that can handle pretty any dh you throw at it. The one downside is that it's pretty pricey for the build that I'm looking for.

 

My Switchblade is due to arrive in the January-March timeframe... from all my research, it sounds like the ultimate do-it-all bike for someone who rides a wide variety of terrain, including but not limited to really rowdy stuff. I've had the chance to putter around a parking lot on one but can't honestly say I've put any trail time on one yet.

Currently I'm riding a Mach 429 Trail, the two-generations-old version of the Trail 429. I've ridden everything from a 50-mile XC race (I'm no racer - it was a day where I got to ride 50 miles of new-to-me singletrack with aid stations along the way) to double blacks at Colorado ski resorts on it, and I've definitely tiptoed around the edges of its intended use but it's never let me down. Suspension setup is key. I thought really hard about getting the Trail 429 Enduro build this time around, but felt that the longer travel of the Switchblade would be a better fit for the stuff I love most.

 

i love riding my patrol. ive set PRs both up and downhill on it. the new one you can put a double crown on. admittedly i felt beat after doing 4 days on the colorado trail, but im putting that more on my fitness than the bike

 

Ha. I'm one of three members of our trail org. We don't have any funding for stuff like that. It comes out of my pocket regardless. We also don't cut many new trails.

Not a bad idea to justify spending a bit more if it's for the community. I just don't want to pay for a "fancy" one when I'll also pay a boatload for shipping, customs, and handling fees to get it to Canada.

That's why I was asking about the one I posted....It's cheaper shipping in Canada.

So hard to buy a damn hoe. Ha

 

That's what has sold me on the switchblade. Everyone says the same thing about it being basically a swiss army knife.

Haven't ever riden any Pivots before, but I've heard great things about the 429 as well. Basically a step down from the switchblade in terms of travel. But the switchblade sounds more geared towards the kinds of riding I like to do.

 

My only gripe about Pivots are the pressfit BBs.

 

Damn inflation is raising the price of a good hoe.

 

Yea I saw that in the specs and was dissapointed about that too.

All modern bikes should come with threaded BBs

 

It seems real petty to gripe about pressfit until you have an issue. The Sentinel should be on your radar as well.

 

I think even Trek has been moving to threaded BB on their recent redesigns. They’ve been a long time pressfit holdout.

 

I had a pressfit on my 2019 slash and it was a nightmare trying to get the dropper post cable housing up through the frame
my 2021 has a threaded BB.

 

FWIW, I've had creaking issues on other bikes and I thought I had one on my Mach 429 Trail a couple years ago, but it turned out to be my pedal. I have a lot of friends who ride Pivots, all with pressfit BBs, and we all have the same story - other bikes have creaked, but a Pivot never has.

 

I could definitely see that scenario. When you see a pivot in person you immediately get the luxury automobile feeling. Quality frame manufacturing for sure.

 

I’ll second that. I had the same exact bike (Mach 429 trail) and it never ever creaked in 4 years of ownership (two frames total). I broke the first one, had it warrantied and then sold it because I started to run out of bike.

 

Yea the amount of people out there has really ramped up in 2021 it’s probably the Strava/Trailforks/mtb project affect.

 

My big toe still feels broken but I should be able to hobble along if you guys don't mind a more abbreviated and slower ride. Say something like P1 and P2. Meet at the bottom of P2 Sunday at 9am. PM me if you need coordinates.
