Curious if when you all upgrade wheels, if you added a 5th full size wheel and what do you do with the spare release chain? Can it be romoved, or secured so it doesnt just dangle?

    Thank you!

The whole crank chain assembly is easy to remove. It’s just fastened to the cross member with four bolts. They are tight from the factory, but will break free. Take it off and store it in your garage.

How does the full size spare attach to underside of bed without crank chain assembly?

Why not use the spare tire hoist to hold your spare tire? Novel idea I know.

It doesn’t. Spare goes in the bed, roof, bumper, or chase truck.

Gotcha. Reason I ask is that my factory spare is 245 on a 16” rim. Other 4 are 265/65R17. That kinda sucks that I’ll have to buy a new 17” rim for full size spare.

Just bu a similar circumference tire for a 16" wheel, mount it on the spare, and put it back underneath.

You can fit a 33" under with a little persuasion with a sledge hammer

A 245/75/16 (assuming you have the common size spare) is the same diameter as a 265/65/17. You don't need to change anything, that spare will be just fine.

My factory spare is a 265/65R17. I plan on moving up to 265/70R17's next year and will just mount the new tire to the same spare rim and under the bed.

+1 on zip tie. Upgraded the spare to the same wheel and tire and put in the back under the shell. Easier to remove for use and check air pressure.

Unless you're using 35" or larger tires on the ground the factory spare is close enough. My spare is a 31", 265/70/16. I have 32", 265/75/16's on the ground. The spare is about 1" shorter and the same width as the tires on the ground. It might not be the best idea to use 4X4 or lock the diff with the smaller spare on there unless in really slippery conditions. But to get home that is close enough.

As another said, you can fit a 33” tire without too much effort under there. I added a 5th wheel when I upgraded tires.

Not a good idea to remove the tire from under the bed, to the top of the bed, on a permanent or for everyday driving, or at least not for on-road.
And I did not get a matching fifth tire because even a matching tire will not be worn to the same thread depth as the other four, therefore it’s still only used as a spare.

Every 3-6 months if you rotate your tires, incorporating the spare into the rotation will keep the tread depth similar.

But I may want a different set/brand/type tire next time, which would either bring me back to the same conundrum or make the same costly mistake again. Besides, changing four tires is a PITA nuff as it is let alone the spare too. And the TPMS only reads 4 tires and I like to see the pressure of all the tires on the road on a daily basis.

It's actually easier when incorporting the spare into the mix, but you still only dismount and mount 4 wheels with a 5 wheel rotation, so it's not more work.

You can still keep one of the 5 as your spare when you buy new tires, so it doesn't have to impact whatever you do when it's time for new tires.

If you have a matching 5th wheel, there is no reason not to use all 5, unless you just like having a new tire you never use.
