Fumoto Fact(s) You Might Not Know

I never thought of this. You may have single handedly sold me on one of these valves so I can FINALLY trash my oil pan. It's a pain to store in an apartment lol.

Would you recommend the Position Adjustable valve for this?

I worked with GD/EB for a while and then went down to Pascagoula, MS, Mayport, FL (A/S) and my final stop was across the country in Bremerton, WA. Good times.

 

Me too. Started right there at EB too. My Space Shuttle engine was down there at Stennis in Bay St Louis, MS. Small world.

 

I think people let their egos get the best of them. It's a very convenient design and has a lot of positives going for it. I personally prefer installing a neodymium drain plug made of stainless steel in an effort to catch as many sub-whatever micron metal particles the Amsoil filter can't catch.

 

I saw a recent comment for and also against looking for any debris in the oil drain pan when doing an oil change. I try to always start with a clean drain pan so I can detect any metal or signs of a potential problem. It has been my experience that when a motor starts to make metal it can be seen as a slight glitter left over in the bottom of the pan. A classic example is when the cam starts to gall. I also cut open the oil filter and check the filter media for any bits. It is a process that is standard in aircraft as well. Bonus, with motorcycles you can also find chunks of transmission gears!

 

Or, have you seen my bypass setup? This might quell any particulate concerns you may have.

 

I have not and would love to! It's funny you mention the bypass setup. I did my first oil change today and looked at the inlet/outlet on the oil filter housing/unit and thought, "well wouldn't that be convenient for a bypass setup..."

 

They’re a little pokey, yes. Gives you plenty of time to get in there and grease that drivetrain!

I was on the LCS contract in MS for quite a while before I went to Mayport (and stints at Kings Bay). Very small world, indeed!

 

I think that's too cool. Crawling underneath and looking at the oil return hose gave me some ideas in how to install a secondary oil filter, but I like your system of draining the fumoto, then straight into the bypass, and then back in to whichever engine of your choosing. Amsoil SS is definitely one of the better if not the best oil you can find, I've used it for 15 of my 30 years.

I am one of those weirdos who installed neodymium plugs on the both the drain and fill of the diffs, transmission and transfer case, and these sort of things interest me. You mentioned a million mile truck, this is my intention with this Tacoma. I'm trying to see if there is anything out there that even compares with OEM filtration efficiency, and other than the Donaldson Powercore, which I am learning more about, I don't think there is. This is all good stuff.

I’d love to get information about those neodymium plugs for the diffs, transfer and transmission. Might you be able to share this info? Source, part numbers, etc.

 

Pardon the long post, but it's been a bit of a saga for me. I ordered drain plugs for all four areas from Dimple Magnetics on 8/29/21, and have not heard anything after inquiring about order status or received any sort of shipping information, so I began looking elsewhere and filed a paypal case.

Votex is the only maker of stainless steel neodymium plugs for all our powertrain components except the front diff drain plug that I know of. Gold Plugs is another maker, but I haven't confirmed fitment of theirs other than for the engine oil.

So basically every fill and drain, front diff, transfer case, manual transmission, and rear differential is an M18x1.5 thread pattern except one, the exception being the front differential drain plug, which is an M24x1.5. They had to make one different, larger in diameter, but retain the same 10mm allen plug to challenge you. I believe the automatic transmission uses at least 2 of the 3 plugs in M18x1.5 in the fill and check, but I am not totally sure about the drain. Both the automatic and manual transmission has internal magnets as well, but I add magnets wherever fluids/oils exists if possible. Anyway, here are the M18x1.5 Toyota factory plugs that are compatible.

90341-18021 is the round one with the 10mm Allen and short magnet.


90341-18057 is 24mm hex head with a short magnet.


90341-18040 is 24mm hex head with a tall magnet.


90341-18035 is the 10mm Allen key with a tall magnet.


90341-18044 from the old 90's twin turbo Supra. Jowett, a member here posted all of this stuff in a different thread and I emailed the information to myself. However, none of these factory plugs are neodymium.


Edit to add Lexus Part # 90341-24016 in M24x1.5 specifically for the front differential drain and is a short magnet. This plug is easier to work with than the existing 10mm and is probably the best option for replacement at this time of the 10mm which seems to strip so easily for everyone.




Since Dimple is not looking good for me, there is another maker called Votex, which makes an 18x1.5 plug compatible with our trucks, the only stainless steel neodymium plugs I know of. I explained to Zach at Votex (an owner/operator) how the front diff plug is the bane of Tacoma front diff existence and it looks like he is pretty good with communication, and is set to make one available in the next few months.

Anyway, the Votex part number for our M18x1.5 is: DP007


There is also a company called Gold Plug but I am not sure if they fit except for the engine oil pan. I am in the process of finding out. Votex does fit however and I can confirm is a quality plug. The ring of the plug where the gasket sits is a tiny bit smaller than OEM but I don't have any issues with factory gaskets. I was putting together this information and wanted to make one thread as resource material for other nerds who want to keep as much metal out of their unfiltered powertrain components as possible.

Also I can only confirm fitment of the two factory M18x1.5 long and the one factory extra long Supra magnet in the manual transmission drain and rear differential drain at this time. The neodymiums are closer to the short than long magnets and will fit anywhere. I hope this helps.

Here’s a thought. Wouldn’t we just need to figure out where to source these magnets and figure out how to bond them to our plugs? If, so, I’d purchase all new plugs and bond these on myself. I know we have many members here will be able to identify for us how to do this.
