Thought about that too because...v8. But that said, not a lot of support either, less probably than a 1st gen tacoma. I don't think its really that much different overall from a 2nd gen taco is it GVWR wise? I don't think its any beefier, if anything worse. You get the better steering rack design, LBJ design, Dovetailed rear frame, huge aftermarket support(for now) in a 2nd gen taco compared to a tundra.

If you're getting a tundra, a 2nd gen phatty would be the way to go if you go there.

    Thats a good point.

I will say that 07-10 will be more affordable for the most part.

Having easier access to the back seat is the main reason for me.

With a 2nd gen, I might actually be OK with an ext cab, since they have those suicide doors - because back seat access is my priority as well.

It's a great place to keep stuff. Especially if you pull the back seat. So much room.

    ah okay. I couldn't remember.

Well that said, there are WAY more double cabs out there than extended cabs so probably better luck finding a used one. Plus in Dan's situation(2 other people to haul around) the back seat will be worth it. That and I still say its way easier to pack a 5' bed than a 6' bed. He's not hauling around a bike or anything in the bed.

Well either I haven't seen new tires in a really long time or these things are pretty damn chunky for an AT.

They look good at least. I think they might be a touch taller than the 255s. Wider for sure. Hope they do good in the snow this winter.

Need to start doing my own alignments now. Local place took the truck to the Ford dealership. They couldn't get the wheel straight supposedly and put my castor at 2⁰ when it was well over that. Even though their before says it was around 2⁰.

Cost 145 freaking bucks. Like wtf. Used to be 90. Doesn't seem like it drives straight either which is great..

Looks good. The tread pattern of those tires reminds me a duratracs a lot.

Sorry to hear about your alignment experience. Did the move the cam tabs? I mark mine so I can know if/when they change them.

What support do you need? I think Dan is capable of fabricating his own armor. Suspension really comes down to personal preference in the valving. Maybe the rack is better but the OTRs are pencil thin. Quick Google search has the Tundra at 2000lbs payload and the 2nd gen at 1650lbs.

Damn, that's robbery. Almost what I paid for the lifetime Firestone alignment 7 years ago. I've considered doing alignments as a side gig and maybe I should.

No I didn't. Haven't looked at them really either. I remember where they were roughly.

Lugs are much more dense than a duratrac I think. Closer to a KO and a wildpeak at I think. Still seem like they will do the trick. Time will tell.

Yeah way to expensive. I just need to suck it up and do it myself.

I know he can but I also know he doesn't want to spend two weeks building a front bumper when he could spend a day installing one and maybe modding it a bit to whatever and then go wheel for two weeks.

Custom = time. Lots of it.

Tie rods are thin but they aren't pushing the wheel like ours they pull it which means they don't get subjected to as much force. It's a better design. As is the LBJ.

Doesn't mean they don't bend but not as likely as you'd think.

350lbs difference isn't worth all the time saving stuff you can get for the truck in so many ways and options to fit your needs over a tundra.

Doesn't one side pull and the other push simultaneously on either setup? I'll have to take a look at a 2nd gen.

Well yeah but pull as in they are on the front side of the wheels not the back like ours. So force put on the wheel by rocks aren't just pushing an beating shit out of the rack as bad.

Long travel guys have talked about this a bunch. It's also possible, though expensive, to swap a 2nd gen tundra rack on. Then it's a whole other level but also very pricey.

Well I'd say they did a s*** alignment I just checked the cams and one of them is almost upside down. So that's nice I'm driving to Powell tomorrow anyway to tear the truck apart to get ready to weld in new engine perches so when I'm done with that I'll have a nice flat space to redo it myself which will be fun to try to play with the light racing SPC upper control arms as well.

Nice. Definitely look mean. I'm with Mike that they remind me of a Duratrac - probably more in the sidewall than tread pattern.

I'm curious how loud they are compared to the Maxx on the highway. That's one thing I've really enjoyed about them is that they are much quieter than the Duratracs were.

Sucks about the alignment. I'm going for my 4th attempt over a 3 week period at some point soon here. :annoyed:

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I probably could do it, the question is whether I want to do it. Some stuff I probably would do myself from now on - sliders for sure, rear bumper maybe (from a kit?). Rack, of course. Skids and front, I'd probably still purchase, just because they seem finicky and like I'd rather just be out on the trail enjoying. But who knows, if it's a backup truck, maybe downtime isn't a big deal. :notsure:

    - - -

I'm done rebuilding the rear shocks. First one (with photos and triple checking each step) took about 6 hours as I figured out how things went together, etc. Second one was 2 hours start-to-finish.

I was amazed at several things:
    1. ADS' machined parts inside the shock are much more intricate than the King parts I saw in the video I watched. Completely captured races machined into the inside of billet for seals, for instance.
    2. ADS' end caps seem much more secure to me than King (but both probably work just as well).
    3. OMG, a rebuild kit has like 20 seals in it, and our shocks only use like 7-8.
    4. Was very cool to see the inner workings. Pretty impressive that these things have lasted ~80K miles and no leaks.

Are you doing your own alignments? And I will find out how loud they are tomorrow I guess.

I know I'm at The point in my life where I would rather pay for parts to bolt on than fabricate. I just don't have the time like I used to anymore.

    Cool things about the rebuild.

Saw that one yesterday and almost shared it too. It's got a massive dense though right behind the driver's side rear door that's kind of fugly.
