Got a link for the intake. I'd do it for 10hp!

This is the best advice in here so far. Keep the truck low, super light (and small) wheels and tires, and if you're about to fabricate something, make a chin strap like the 3rd gens (and most other trucks) have.

    Nope

'Feel' is rarely meaningful in these matters.

???? Compared to what are you decreasing? Do you have a non scoop hood you installed to comparo test in controlled conditions?

    That's correct

    Not. Going. To. Happen.

The best you could do is go scoopless and you'll still get the same MPG.

Consider this. With the pressure OEs have for fleet MPGs, if the scoop was a problem, do you really think they'd continue to make it available?

If MPG is that critical to you, consider driving an econo box. Some really nice ones out there.

Steps to push your mpg as high as possible.

    1. Maintenance. Keep it tuned and working. Specifically, spark plugs, MAF, Throttle body, air cleaner element.
    2. Reduce friction. Keep good fluids in diffs, xfer case, tranny, engine and prop shaft.
    3. Tire pressures. Keep on the recommended pressure or 1-2 psi above.
    4. Keep the truck stock. Tires, lift, wheels.......
    5. Remove any weight possible. Leave the stuff you haul around for the rare incidence of "just in case".
    6. Remove the weight in your right foot. easy accel, coast prior to stopping.

Hood scoop isn't the MPG killer.

Over the last year of tracking, my 4.0L is averaging 19-20 mpg with mixed driving. I've hit a high of 21.5 mpg on a 6 hour run on the interstate at 70 mph.

Not sure I buy it. It would work as a ram air setup. You would need to be moving for it to become forced air. Maybe I'm missing something.

Have your dino sheet with this as the only change?

Right! I hate getting crickets when I ask for proof:notsure:. Like I said, I'd do the mod for 10hp..

If I put my truck on a Dyno I'd have the sheet in my glove box, in my phone and one in the underwear drawer especially if a little duct work was getting me more than 50hp. Was hoping I'd be proven wrong.

I do not have the functional skewp on my truck so I cant prove dyno numbers . I only passed on a few pics that I saved of what has been done in the past .
With this being said , use the search function at Tacoma World and you will find hundreds of posts on the functional hood scewp topic with the horsepower ratings you are looking for . I do not remember through the years which Tacoma World member was saying the gains he encountered by installing the skewp . Not everyone has a dynamometer available to them

Must have... But gearcruncher is a pretty smart guy. He originally mentioned it so I bought in. Love the idea of a functional skewp

Driving with your hood up would be that kind of negative mpg. The scoop is doing nothing to mpg

Don' use Bondo to make the skewp aerodynamic.

Use drywall mud. Cheap, easy to form, easy to sand and any Big Box store has paint.

I had the exact same thoughts. He absolutely knows drive trains but the repeated evidence I've seen says the scoop is completely useless. Plus, if Toyota went through the effort of putting a scoop on the truck and it had the potential for 50hp gains and then they DIDN'T make that scoop functional...that would be stupid. Plus, CAI, exhaust, headers, etc all together might net you 50hp if you're lucky. So a scoop giving you a 50hp gain seems absolutely impossible.
But if it is....sign me up. I'll do it tomorrow! :D

The problem with the scoop enabled dyno pulls is that they are static. As in no air flow is occurring from the 'ram air' effect everyone fawns over.

Which is a myth in the FI world for the most part anyway.

NOTE: I'm not addressing @Wattapunk here. His dyno man has a device to compensate for the lack of vehicle movement.
