I have a 2021 sr5 dclb 2wd v6 and want a locking rear end. How do i determine if my axle has the ability to accept this feature?

The E-lockers require a different housing. Best to get the entire axle housing. Look into the aftermarket wiring as well. The lockers are not a simple on off switch.

I've modified an old 8" non-E-Locker housing from my old 94 Pickup to accept a E-Locker from a tacoma, but it was quite the job. And I dont think it's possible on the new trucks since the axle housing is much more different (I think)

Probably be cheaper and easier in the long run to go ARB or something similar. Can also change gearing while you're there.

Get an aftermarket one. It will allow more versatility (you can lock ARB in 2H, 4H, or 4L; factory only locks in 4L), and will probably cost the same or less. Going with a good ARB air setup would also give you options to use that compressor for airing tires up, having a truck horn installed, or connect to a front locker later!

I would look for a off-road axle..probably be cheaper too.

Just curious, have you tried the Auto LSD yet? I'm 2wd as well and from what I've seen, pressing the traction control off to activate Auto LSD is pretty helpful off road as well. Not sure how it stacks up against a locked rear but it gets the truck to send power to the wheel with the most traction.

AutoLSD is useful. I have 4wd, but I still use AutoLSD in the winter while daily driving. It’s quick and easy compared to engaging 4wd to get out of a parking spot.

AutoLSD is helpful in easy spots, but really the basic traction control will do just about as much. Putting it in 4WD is better, but if I had the ability to truly lock the rear in 2H I would for most trail runs.

I watched a video of a 2wd taco trying to go up a steep grade 1rst in regular drive, then with auto lsd with no avail. Then he enguaged the locker and was able to make it up the hill. I watched real close and all three attempts was using the same line. I havent done any off roading yet, its still a brand new truck, just want to have it if i need it.

4wd is a much bigger upgrade compare to traction control or a rear locker. I suggest selling the 2wd truck and buying a 4wd truck if you want take it off road.

The TRAC system is not nearly as aggressive at AutoLSD.

The 2wd version is the limit of my price range, i just cant justify that much money since 99 percent of its use is going to work and pulling a small trailer hauling things. Dont get me wrong, i went to the dealership to try to get one, but i just could not justify that big of a monthly payment. Mortgage is way more important to me than having a new 4x4.

I actually bookmarked that link just in case I ever feel the need to have more offroad ability. I think a good all terrain tire upgrade would be in line 1st before a locker though.

Locking differentials are not cheap either. Put some good tires on and some weight in the bed of the 2wd and call it a day I say.

Don't buy things that you don't know you need, especially when money is a concern.

A 2wd truck with a locker is still a 2wd truck, there are lots of things that you can do offroad with a 2wd truck but it's important to know your limits. Brings friends and tow strap if you get stuck. When you decide you like actually going offroad and learn that a locker would be the difference between easily making it and getting stuck, buy a locker then. Until then save the $1-3k that a locker will set you back to make more appropriate upgrades or put away for a 4wd.

I plan on looking for a wrecked taco with the rear end i need and just see what it cost, probably to much, but it dont hurt to look around. I am also looking for at tires for cheep with rims so i can just change out for hunting and stuff and run the street tire for work and trips. As far as getting stuck, i know where not to try to go and where is safe. Long term plans also is to get a winch bumper with a winch so if i bite off more than i can chew, i wont have to call for help.

I gotta echo some of the others here. If you couldn't justify the price of 4x4, I don't see how if makes sense to dump money into mods to make it more capable offroad. Mods that won't make it equal to a 4x4.

It was 3 grand for 4x4. What you listed will easily match that. And it still won't be 4x4... Ride with what you got. If it doesn't work, either change what you're doing with it or get something else. Good tires and some weight in the back will be your best value.
