Yep. Push it once, let go, push again and hold. Eventually the truck should try to fire. This is how I start the truck if I'm in the passengers side. This should help trouble shoot wether or not it's the brake switch.

Edit to add, you should try this also when the truck is working normal, so u know what to expect

Next time it happens I can take another video and post it. I promise that my method of starting the car is to 1. Unlock the car with the key fob; 2. Press and hold the brake pedal; 3. Push the PTS button. Someone else mentioned performing the push twice and hold the PTS button the second time to bypass the need for the brake. I'm excited to try that option.

As far as the key fob and batteries go, I have changed out the batteries on both my key fobs, a grand total of 2 times each. With every battery that has been in a key fob, it reaches from an ample distance and the has never given me the "key fob not detected error". I have replaced the car battery once, even though the old and new battery tested fine. This issue occurs with both my key fobs. The last time I went to my mechanic, he replaced the brake light sensor (although someone mentioned my truck may have 2? I'm not sure myself and my mechanic is not aware of a second sensor).

As far as repeatability, thats one of the biggest issues.

As far as the mechanic goes, my family has used this guy for a very long time. Whatever skills he lacks in electrical troubleshooting, he has not charged me for any of the work thats been done since the first visit when we replaced the starter. There's just no concerns of gouging or misleading me. He is losing on this car much more than me.

I tried it right after you told me . During this test it worked to start my car like normal, then it worked to push and hold the PTS, and then it started again. I'm pretty excited to know about this. I'm hoping it helps

I mean, it would be killer if the issue resolved itself, but I'd at least like to know that @Philiojenkins never needs to Uber away from his Taco.

Did I see that you had the glass break sensor installed? Wonder if that is messing with it

It's was used minimally and I took it back to the shop bc my mechanic said he wanted to take a look at it again. He said that there was a code that was read for the immobilizer.

I guess it was actually the second time that code was there

So I go the truck back a couple of days ago. My mechanic said he couldn't bypass the security system like he was hoping, so he called in one of the Toyota mechanics that he uses for consults. That guy couldn't find anything wrong either, so he "did a few things that might help" and I will be trying it out again soon. I was busy so I didn't have time to ask more about the things that were done.

This will be the first time I've had the truck and could try the push and hold to start method if it acts up again (which I think it will)

About the only non-hardware solution is to delete all the keys from the ECU and reprogram them. Hopefully that is what he did.

So I finally ran some complex errands today (I never turned the truck off until I got home) and sure enough, it wouldn't start. (It was just short of an hours worth of driving.

Interestingly, when I tried to bypass the brake and start the car with the push and then push and hold method, I noticed that a sound comes from underneath the truck at about the 20 second mark. This is the same sound the occurs for the first 20 seconds or so if I try and start the car with the brake pedal pressed. At one point I was asking (wrongly) if that sound could be related to the fuel pump. I posted a youtube video where you can hear it.

    https://youtu.be/mj1YQESagtQ

I gotta head to bed for work tonight, I'm interested to see if anyone can recognize the sound

Interesting I don’t know what that sound is.
Hypotheses: the truck doesn’t know it’s in Park or Neutral so it won’t start.

Has any mechanic looked to see if your park/ Neutral position sensor is bad or out of alignment? I would think it would give you a message that says ‘Shift to N or P” instead of the messages from the first video.

Were you able to start it with that method?

I does sound like the pump. With my non-PTS Taco, it will prime on the first key insertion and at random key insertions after that. It is only for about 1sec though. I have some videos of it around here somewhere when talking about removing the chime switch in the ignition barrel.

    Here's are my vids:

Op, if your mechanic (or the Toyota contact they know) has access to Techstream, then give them the attached file.
