Im about to install a harrop rear locker on my rig. The locker itself is a grand (I’m also doing 5.29 gears since it’s open parts for all that is another grand) and install is a grand.

maybe you can get it cheaper but I’m paying $3k to install a locker.

I recommend contacting a shop that does locker installs, that’s what I did and all my questions were immediately answered. If you call Eaton customer service they could probably tell you off the bat. There’s quite a few configurations so it’s easy to get turned around and chose the wrong products.

Been on the locker hunt also, since I have a sport model. I like the idea of an e-locker, the harrop looks nice, doesn't eaton make one also? ARB is obviously a great option, but reliability and extra cost of the air system weighs on my mind. I know the factory e-locker is a little hick-uppy, but it works, no? I can't find where to order one from Toyota, but surely they have to stock it for repairs, etc. Closest I found was a rear chunk for about $1500, doesn't say anything about the locker being in the unit, but it sure looks easy for someone to install, no dicking with clearances, etc like any other option out there. I have a manual, and the rears on the auto and manual are different, but the trd pro comes with a manual option, so presumably the rears are the same as a manual sport sans locker? Thoughts?

Eaton makes the harrop locker. & all the shops I talked to said trying to install an OEM locker is more trouble than it’s worth they all recommend aftermarket.

& I went with an e locker because of long term reliability. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t consider installing a compressor I just wouldn’t use it for my locker.

My vote, bearing that cost is important, is to buy a clean low mileage 4.30 8" open differential. Add a Torsen/Trutrac/helical worm gear diff and slap it home. Sell the stock 3.90 to recoup a good chunk of the cost. The traction control and Torsen counteract each other's weaknesses, and you'll gain substantial traction benefits all the time.

... the 4.30 will help with towing and add a smidge off road.

What he said. Spot on! A 2wd with rear locker will work wonders. It will get you much further than what most people think. Forget about trying to find a 3rd gen OR rear axle to swap with yours. The wiring on these new axle aren't like the previous models, they are a little more involved

A rear chunk is $1500 from toyota tho, not a whole lot of difference there on cost vs the other options. Just wondering if it also has the locker in it also

Ok Eaton does make their own locker it's part number 14235-1 for a manual
Here's what is posted for a vendor, which runs $1100ish:
Eaton's E-locker4 differential for 2016-Current (3rd Gen) Toyota Tacoma with rear beam axle, manual transmission and factory locker. (14235-1)

Eaton's E-Locker internal gears are net-forged, providing the strength and durability necessary for off-road and recreational driving. Its electronic control also provides added reliability over similar air-actuated products.

FITMENT: 2016-Current Toyota Tacoma models (8.0” autos without OE locker)

    SPECS:

    • DIFFERENTIAL TYPE: Locking
    • GEAR SPLINE TOOTH COUNT: 32 EA
    • RING GEAR SIZE: 8.9 IN
Still wondering if it will work, since it states "and factory locker," which my sport does not have.

Hard top camper...many more to add+
One rear locker will alway be better then two LSD’S -(front & rear)…one LSD , will always be better then a open spool…
Keep in mind a full time locker…is always lock…driving on turns, will push the truck straight…and every turn when daily driving will feel very harsh, (chirping the tires), because outside will spin more and inside tire trying to catch up…
There for.. Air lockers and electronic lockers ..are the best because it can be un-lock till you need them…
    Best to research this further…
Towing.. lockers are great..especially on a slippery boat ramp…I seen two wheel drive trucks out perform a 4x4 without any lockers or LSD’S…trying to pull a boat out of the water…

if you want to go four wheeling? Best to get a 4x4? Off course there are many off roads, where a 4x4 is not needed…
    Aloha,

You're thinking short term. The 4X4 costs more now, but is worth more later. You can spend a lifetime buying/selling/trading only 4X4 trucks and not spend any more than the guy who does the same thing with only 4X2 trucks.

Throwing money at what you have will cost you as much or more than you'd have spent to just buy a 4X4 to begin with and it still won't be as good. If I had a hard budget I'd have bought a used 4X4.
