My stock wheels are in rough shape from years of winter salted roads. The inner paint top coat is gone and need to restore them, any tips to get them ready for a coating sometime?

I'm not too sure, I'd think taking them to get abrasive blasted somewhere would probably be the easiest route.

Powder Coating them they should be about 80 bucks a wheel and will last you forever

I'd just hunt down another stock set, they're plentiful.

Yes, unless base material is treated correctly and properly, powder coating is no better than liquid paint.

Seems to be dependent on where you live, me being in the Ca desert it will never rust, but I see ones by the beach that are orange

You might inquire at a Toyota dealerbody shop, several years ago had Camry in for a little collision repair , that day there was a guy with a mobile wheel shop restoring wheels for them. I looked in on him he had 2 of 4 done, they looked better than new. Wheels being kinda special I took it that body shops farm that type of work out to specialists, and these guys have a route of shops they do work for.

Doesn't matter if steel or aluminum wheels.

The wheels would need to be stripped of all paint and corrosion. Repair if needed. If damage is severe, then replace.

I just restored a set of '06 OEM aluminum wheels. Paint stripper did not touch the paint. I had to use wire wheels to completely strip the wheels.

After was prep, prime, paint, clear.

Did this last summer. I'm anxious to see how these withstand the winter snow/ice smutz the city drizzles everywhere.

If you took these to a place that paints or powder coats wheels they'd more than likely media blast them.

Get 2014-2022 4Runner SR5 wheels. 4Runner owners can't see to get rid of them and giving them away for free after upgrading.

Certain automakers use a formula like this from factory/new.
-media blast. IDK what's best, in terms of aluminum oxide abrasive media vs walnut shells, glass bead, etc.
-epoxy powdercoat base coat (it's more soft/rubberized)
    -primer (not sure if self-etching)
    -paint
    -clear coat

It's probably less work for them on a bare metal new wheel. Sand blasting helps achieve that rough surface for things to better adhere to.

To do that now would cost a lot of money.
If you spent $400+ to refinish an ugly OEM design set of wheels just to make them look stock again, that would be a waste of money.
Time to start looking at aftermarket upgrades like Method 701

Convince your elected leaders to stop sprinkling corrosive material on the roads for no reason causing undue expensive damage to your vehicle.
If your wheels are gone, imagine the frame.

Some of this Some of that
Get em sandblasted and paint them with some wheel paint. Should be able to keep the tires on them too. Lots of masking tape before the paint
