I’m not sure when the phrase was coined or who started/created the phrase “the Saban effect”, but if you google it you’ll find several articles that talk about it.
the main theme of the Saban effect is that Head coaches now have a shorter time frame to deliver wins and titles. And even if you’re a consistent winning coach with or with out a national title, then if you’re not in the national title picture yearly, you too will be done. For example, les miles and mark richt. The belief is that Saban created an unrealistic measuring stick for the coaches, bc Saban delivered early at Bama and consistently year after year. Other programs want this (more $$$$$ in titles) and they are willing to turn over coaches (even wining coaches if they feel they can’t get over the hump or stay on top) to try and get to the mountain top or to find the next Saban.
I think everyone can agree what we have seen with Saban probably will never be seen again. And even Saban has spoken out about universities getting rid of good coaches. He made a statement when UGA parted ways with Richt, and I believed he even questioned what type of precedent that would set.
I’ll attach an article. I didn’t read all of it, but it hits on some of the points I mentioned.
Hopefully what I typed makes sense and if not I’m sorry. I’m fighting a headache and it’s bed time for two toddlers. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.on...-cant-be-overstated-alabama-crimson-tide/amp/

Yeah I’ve heard of it and it’s a load of crap lol. I understand him “setting the bar” but I do believe all of these coaches that have been let go or fired or whatever are not let go simply because they aren’t at his level. It’s not that they aren’t competing for championships every year, it’s that they literally SUCK for a year or two. That’s not acceptable. You don’t go undefeated to a .500 season. You just don’t. It’s fine to go to a 10-11 win season. The “saban effect” is something made up by Alabama fans I’m sure.

6 teams out of 130 is less than 5% of college football. Everyone is tired of watching the same rigged system let the same teams in every season (Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and whatever 2nd SEC team).

I don't even watch the playoff games because it is so boring to see the same teams. It holds no interest for the other 95% teams and their fans.

I agree, it should go to 16 teams. That would still only be 12% of college football teams and still the lowest postseason participation rate of all sports.

So let's say a few teams win out.

Wake Forest goes undefeated and is ACC champ.

Oklahoma State wins out big 12 champ

    Cincy wins out also.

Michigan State wins out and are big 10 champs.

Say Alabama beats Georgia and each have 1 loss.

    Cincinnati
    Wake Forrest
    Michigan State
    Oklahoma State

    Would be the playoff teams.

Does anyone believe any of those teams could beat a 1 loss Alabama or 1 Georgia?

Then there's Coastal Carolina undefeated also.

and this is why a 4 team playoff formula is broken. IMHO an expansion is warranted but the question is to how many teams. I think 8 makes sense and none of this power 5 champions are automatic bids, bs we all know pac12 is trash

Agreed the 4 team playoff is trash. The reason I proposed automatic bids is because it takes the committee opinion out (sort of) and lends credence to measurable stats. The power 5 conferences are generally accepted as the most elite among college football teams. Obviously this isn't always the case, but that's where the at-large bids come into play. It gives teams a chance to show their worth that otherwise wouldn't get a chance. For example: Boise State back in the early 2010's. They had a weak schedule, yes, but they were consistently winning those games 55-7 or more. Or Western Michigan in 2016. Perhaps they didn't deserve a shot at the playoff but they went toe-to-toe with #8 Wisconsin that year in a bowl game and lost by one score. Teams like this get overlooked simply because the opinion is that they aren't as good. Maybe they aren't. Let them prove it. Anyone remember #11 Loyola-Chicago making the Final 4 in the NCAA basketball tournament? Or #15 Florida Gulf Coast making it to the final 8 in 2013? These were teams that were supposed to be cupcake games in round one and weren't. This isn't going to happen every year, but let them prove it.

Bama lost to a shitty A&M team, so I’ll say yes for any of those teams beating them. GA, possibly.

Exactly. All 4 of those teams get rolled by both bama and Georgia.
