Let's See Some Softoppers

Do you fold your Softtopper and carry the bike that way? How long does it take to fold and then unfold the Softtopper after taking the bike off and on? I'm curios because I specifically got my long bed because I wanted to comfortably carry my bikes around.

 

I have seen a few online with a google image search. My 13 Tacoma is silver with a black softopper, and bronze rims. I would seriously consider the tan given the rims.

Ok, ST question. How on earth do you get rails to not buckle inward? I've trying everything. Not over tightening, placement. Seem soon as I snap it down it was to cave that way.

 

For me it worked to move the softopper rails inboard slightly and make sure the little nub on the clamp was properly seated in the groove in the bed rail. I think I had to file some burrs off one of the nubs to make it fit.

 

I swear I have my clamps nice and snug up in there and even moved the rails a little more inboard. I still get the rails twisting in.

 

Probably just my OCD. I mean it operates and functions just fine. Maybe one day I will look into a different clamp solution.

 

Yeah it definitely works. A bit of a chore to fold up maybe. But looks so...weird.

That’s a non-issue. I’ve done 80mph for an hour straight with side winds at 30mph. It will be all good. On a side note +1 for softopper. I’ve mentioned it before, but adding earth magnets between the Velcro and top layer on the rear panel makes for the best option to not have to use the Velcro stuck to your tailgate. This has lasted me a long time and has worked amazing. Seriously, they should come this way.

6 of these earth magnets holds the rear window lip to the truck very well and has not scratched once in 3 years.


Hand stitching these earth magnets in took about an hour or so.

 

i did a similar mod and it’s awesome. i took like 10 of those rectangular earth magnets and spread them out through a single spot cut near the center of the velcro stitching. then i just sewed the one spot up.

 

You are also correct. My topper is secure. My gripes are purely cosmetic because it looks weird crooked and it pulls up a little bit on the outside, so you can see a portion of the frame beneath the canopy. First world problems.

 

Mine have also never sat flush but without any issue other than cosmetic. I've always wondered if this might be solved if the clamps had some extra material to help level it when tightening.

 

And no issues with the magnets pulling up the paint?

 

Too bad we can't wedge some material there. I imagine that'd throw off the alignment of the holes. If someone with the raw material and skillset could make a new clamp top with the additional material, we could experiment. For science!

 

Anyone got any pics of their black tacos with black rims and a tan soft topper? I'm looking to get something that'll allow me to camp from my truck bed and between this and spending big money on an alucab explorer canopy. Thanks in advance

This is what I did. Lots of work, but sturdy as it will also be the base for a bed rack.

It would be an interesting comparison to superimpose the short bed and long bed profiles.

Or it could be that Short bed owners tend to crowd the cab in efforts to minimize the cab to ST gap when installing.
I fell for that on first effort, but had to rethink even on the long bed, when there was scant room to fold the topper forward in the stowed position.

 

I doubt you can fold the topper down when positioned so close to the cab. Have you tried?
