Thank you, thank you. This was the most anticlimactic of all my check rides

...^^^... Excellent video ... especially hearing that Otter 1340 Wasp growl.

Hard to believe that the original 1340 design is almost 100 years old.

Watched the whole video .... thanks for sharing ...

PS .. The WACO that I went up in (a week ago) at PDK had a good sound too ... but not nearly as good as the 1340.

...^^^... If you have an advanced notice on being at PDK ... send me a message if you want to meet for a burger at the Downwind.

I moved last year and now live about 40 miles north of PDK ... but am down there several times a month.

PS ... I usually go there when there is no traffic (roads) ... lol

I admit to being partial to the sound of the R-985, but the 1340 on the Otter is pretty sweet too. Don’t have any piston Otters around here anymore. Kind of miss that sound…the combination of the big prop, reduction gears, and augmentor stacks made it a pretty unique noise. The Norseman had a very different signature with the same engine.

I think it comes down to, all round engines sound awesome!

had a couple Otters on floats that would frequent the area I lived in in AK. Knew them by their sound, definitely unique. And there were a few other planes that I knew just by the noise of the engines - they were distinct enough based on various mods the owners did to them to tell them apart from the 100+ others that would pass overhead everyday. Mainly friends' and neighbors' planes.

There are two sounds I really missing hearing on a regular basis.
Loons in the evening and the sound of a beaver coming to pick you up after a couple weeks in the bush. Nothing sounds like a beaver, especially when you are ready to go home.

Someone was out and about in their taildragger today. Couldn't tell if they were doing pattern work or just trying to get down, but they would have had some interesting crosswinds to play with on runway 16:

...^^^... Those pics could be on a magazine cover ...

Those pics remind me when I lived in Canada in the 1980's and got to travel all over Canada and Alaska.

I miss the Montreal area (lived there) and PNW .... and Alaska except in the winter.

Thanks! Pixel night sight deserves the credit. Google puts a pretty good camera on their smartphones.

I have a love hate relationship with winter. When I’m at this home, it seems like there’s always something to do. Keep a fire burning. Plow the driveway. Snowblow pathways. Snowmobile. Snowshoe. Cross country ski. Walk the dogs back in the bush or out on the lake ice. When I’m back in the city for work, it’s nice that the girlfriend, dogs and I are all together. But winters in the city feel confining to me if that makes sense at all. I’ve never felt at ease in a city setting though. At least, when I use to ride, Calgary had a motocross park next to downtown, and off-road riding area’s within 20 minutes of home.

We were based in Cold Lake, our squadron was disbanded in 2006 along with 441 Squadron. The two squadrons combined to form as a super squadron. We re-activated as 409 Squadron. That concept didn’t work and a few years later we spit in two and reactivated 401 Squadron to form two squadrons again.
