So, even in the DC, you had to go for the OR (or maybe SR5 would have done it?) to get the added height stock? From many other posts it sounds as though the DC doesn't really have a true "base" version.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...

base gets thrown around here too easily.....base=non-SR5, non-TRD...still can be prerunner or SR5 but has none of the convenience packages and has black bare fender flares, etc.

the OR, Sport, and any 4x4 or prerunner have a height greater than a stock 5 lug taco. 5 lugs get called a base too often.

Sorry I was way off 'base' Jamie , I stand corrected.

You dont see "base" models at the stealerships. All you see is the TRD or SR5's around here. I ended up with the TRD Sport.

This makes sense. I need a DC 4x4, so sounds like I'm covered no matter which version I get.

Bili's all around, front 5100's at 1.75", rear TSB w/AAL, 265x75/16 BFG AT, Wheelers steelies Type B 4" bs, LEER cap, Tinted, Relentless hybrid sliders welded, Cab mount chop, Plastic trimming, Sock retros, Mirror lift, Satoshi with old school emblem, WeatherTechs, Mudlaps gone, RedLine hood struts, Fumoto valve, Tailgate clamped, Console organizer, Mobtown Offroad Front Recovery Bar
My 2010 is the base model Auto - is DC SB, 4x4, LSD, V6, power everything, VSC, TRAC, ABS w/ EBD, Tilt/telescoping steering, CD w/ 6 speakers, Aux audio input, MP3-CD & Sat radio capable.

Items the base model is missing - color matched bumpers, flares, mirror, and door handle. Did not have tow package but has wiring for fogs and tow. Does not have rear camera or associated rearview mirror.

When sitting inline with the SR5 and TRD models, it was sitting the same height. Sure had different wheels and tires but hood-hood and tailgate-tailgate seemed exactly same. The biggest differences was what you couldn't see from the outside, such as the locker, 'heavy duty suspension', the tow package accessories (cooler, etc). But these options I already knew I was going to put on with aftermarket resources.

For me I like the black, non color matched parts. I knew I would be getting aftermarket bumpers and fogs, with tow points and better lighting. I also knew that an aftermarket suspension would out perform the factory set up (thanks OME). Wheels and Tires would also be replaced to best outfit my type of wheeling. And in the not so distant future, ARB would provide a selectable locker option.

For me, the base model I chose was a smart decision. It provided a lower financing cost. I enjoy customizing my offroad vehicles, it becomes MY Truck. The aftermarket options available greatly improve the trucks abilities, even above the best stock options IMHO.

For those that have had previous Tacomas', why did you choose the model you chose? Did you just get a good deal? Did you not want to put on any aftermarket parts? Few options of models at time of purchase?

2010 Black Sand Pearl Acc cab TRD Off Road V6 SR5 4X4 with the towing pkg. It's heavy tough & I love having the diff locker. I love this rig almost as much as my GF in the pic (by the way check out her latest pose). No disrespect intended but why pay for a "fake hood scoop" it'l do you no good if you get it stuck. Cheers!
