yea i definitely dont see the full slide-in's as comparable due to their sheer weight, only project M.

 

I've camped down into the 20s without any need for insulation. With good bedding and base layer you'll stay plenty warm. Would insulation be nice? sure - but it's not necessary.

To me it all depends on what you are looking for specifically. I personally couldn't consider much beyond the SP because of a parking height limit - so any other option is out the window. That said, the Alu Cab has less interior space, taller overall height, and a much smaller rear door - all of which are negatives to me.

I haven't read particularly good reviews on the Project M build quality, and I question some of their format decisions inside (like the weird side benches). If i was looking at a straight vertical option (vs a wedge) I'd prob go with an OVRLAND instead.

A standard FWC is cool too, but I'm not convinced the shell model is really worth 14k vs other options out there either, plus it's way heavier.

just did a quick lighting test to hopefully dial in placement. My rigid SR's throw so much damn light, I'm going to put them at the ass end. My original plan was to put these under the overhang, but I'm going to audible on that. Rigids at the ass, SSC2 pods under the overhang facing forward at a bit of an angle to light up the door/front end. They will be less bright but I think I want the more usable light in the rear anyways.

Are you charging off of your stock alternator? If so, how did you route the wires from the engine bay back to where you have the charger?

 

Yes, running the positive cable down the driver’s side tucked up around the slider for the most part, and using existing heat shielding in certain places. Cable comes in through the passenger side bed grommet. Neutral runs through the same grommet but straight under the truck and grounded at the chassis.

Pretty rad setups but they are pretty bulky. Buddy just got one.

 

I would wager to say that more than 75% of wedge camper owners don't really go off-road. Those that do, aren't "prerunning" Baja like you did and a heavy FWC would be fine with the appropriate airbags/leaf springs/bump stops.

 

makes sense. Only commented it was bulky. And we weren’t pre-running in that nature. I would expect anyone in here to go in any of the places we were in Baja. it was a mild trip more washboard then whoops. I just think the 4WC are bulky for a Tacoma regardless of use but they are nice

 

Ill be making my camper decision shortly, would love to check out a SPC in person if anyone is local and wants to grab a brew/coffee. I tend to run my truck a bit hard so I’m hoping for some real world experiences.

So far I haven’t been too impressed with the clamp design…it seems a bit of a miss on such a well thought out camper design. Also hoping to see/hear of how the tent and material holds up in high winds and inclement weather.

I’m currently coming from an Autohome RTT and it’s been amazing (fabric retains heat very well but doesn’t condensate, holds up in high winds and rain), but looking to move to a truck-based camper.

I’m in the Bay Area, CA.

 

Was just chatting about Fieldwork or Alpha Acid for a brew with some folks. I have had mine in semi-rough driving, extremely high winds but no rain yet. Early adopter. Depending on your truck I'm not a fan of the clamps but its been mostly if not all an issue on 2nd gens. If your going 3rd gen you may not even run into it as that was the original setup.

 

We're definitely in the group that will be pushing the camper's limits. Based off @nudavinci64 and some others that are like minded and their experiences so far.. I've been trying to take extra steps and ensure I don't run into the same issues. We wheel some rough stuff and hit trails with some speed.. so just knowing what it will be going through and how it will be used.. I know.. for me.. that I will need to beef it up and prep it for that type of use, or change how I drive the truck (and I know that's not gonna happen, I built it for this..lol). So, I'll put in the work to reinforce clamps, make beefier filler material, extra trimming on the roof rack for flex clearance, etc.

I have an idea for the front filler panel and possibly along the bedrails themselves (for 2nd gens with factory bedrails). I'm gonna get some dimensions today and then give SP a call to talk to them. I think it will work out nicely, I just want to make sure it wont interfere with anything they need to do.

My two cents. I got the SP because I occasionally wanted to go down some pretty rough, fairly narrow roads with low-overhanging branches, protruding rock ledges, etc. Most of the time I'm just doing old forrest road camping or driving down easy dirt roads that you could manage in anything, but I wanted the option of going almost anywhere. My favorite camping spot in particular almost defeated my 99 4Runner with a 2" lift and dinged up my 5th Gen 4Runner Trail Edition.

A FWC wouldn't begin to make it down to that spot. An Alu-Cab would, but they don't fit a 1st Gen Tacoma, and they seem claustrophobic inside. GFC has a short sleeping platform, AT Overland Summit is way too pricy and along with the rest has side door limitations. I waited a year for a Drifter before getting the SP. My feet do get cold against the wedge so a Project M or Atlas might fix that, but it's exactly what I wanted.

Having said that, I'm older now and I'm finding the lack of interior amenities and crawling up into the bed and basically living outside until bedtime more and more of a hassle. At a certain point I might decide to get a FWC just for the breakfast nook and the window... and basically become a glorified car camper lol.
