Isn’t paint covered under the original warranty? I’m getting a super white off-road soon hopefully they figured their shit out. I remember back in the day the tornado red VW R32 had terrible issues. Someone was able to peel a giant sheet of clear right off. Since only 500 existed there was a running list on the forums of who had issues, it was 15 percent failure rate.

I had taken delivery of a superwhite trd pro manual in July. I have not taken it to a pain correction place or done a ceramic coat yet but will in the future. I was given a 6year 100k mile warranty for free due to the recent graduate program they had for financing so I'm hoping that that will be long enough to see if I have the issue or not.

My old 2005 indigo blue or whatever the hell it was called had paint problems too. The clear coat was coming off the hood and roof... when winter came and it was freezing and thawing it took the clear coat right off and then the pain soon after leaving the roof to get super rusty really quick. I had to pay multiple thousands of dollars to have the entire thing repainted and the roof fixed. It did look really good after that but they didn't do anything about it or cared.

I guess luckily it had the frame replaced and all suspension parts for free so I can't complain as much but still. It's 2021... superwhite has been out for tons of models, why isn't this shit figured out?

I live in Michigan but my dealership unofficially confirmed its a paint problem but toyota declined to cover it as all of you know. My dealership tried their best and even offered to cover a third of the repair cost out of their pocket.

Bought a used 2017 a few months ago, in this color, manufactured Mexico.

Shortly after I realized someone did a crappy touch up paint job, passenger side rear door, paint was coming off bad. Finally did a touch up job myself, and that day i realized it is starting on my drivers door as well.

Not very happy at all about that, but still love my trucl.

To those asking/hoping your warranty will cover it, this summer my dealer initially refused to look at my 2017 and said "sorry your truck is a 2017 with 70,000 miles on it, we only consider looking at paint if the vehicle is within 3-year or under 30,000 miles." However I will tell you being polite and continuing to push them will get you farther. I'm a few steps in right now, waiting to hear back from their regional rep who reviewed my vehicle. Will be sure to update this thread with any helpful info once I know more.

Here is my experience so far: step 1, detailed my truck (CLEAN) and went to my dealer service dept in person and asked them to please look at my truck but they told me trucks too old since 2017 and to kick rocks. Step 2: politely informed them of all the info I had read online, and that many other toyota models with same paint code are covered going back to 2012/2013, to which they still refused to look at the truck and gave me their card and said to email them some photos (couldn't believe they wouldn't just walk outside). When I walked out I said to myself I wouldn't settle for that b/c I figure they'll just delete the email. Step 3: wait a week, make sure truck is CLEAN, wake up early and buy a bunch of donuts, walk into service department when they open with all the donuts and let the manager know I have no intention of being a problem customer, I just wanted to bring the whole team some treats in the hopes the manager has 5-minutes to look at my truck - politely put assistant manager on the spot in front of colleagues and other customers, who is now excited for donuts and then goes to get main service manager (who of course is hidden in some back office) who comes out and reviews my truck. I show them the failing paint and the whole time be polite and just ask them to help out a loyal customer, I'm not in any rush and not going to be another problem for them - I'm on their timeline if they're willing to help. He lets me know he "knows the deal" about this paint situation and will try to work with me to help out. Step 4: They submit my info into their system and call me a month later when their regional rep will be in the area to review my truck, this happens within a month and I drop the vehicle off for them that day (CLEAN again). It's been about a month since then. I'll give them a call for an update in a few weeks if I don't receive any updates.

Part of me wanted to go into this ready to start yelling if they didn't give me what I wanted, but I've worked in retail, I've worked in the dealership industry, and I know that they deal with pissed off people all of the time and at least in the dealership industry, that usually doesn't get you anywhere. Kindness and patience will (usually but not always) take you much farther with these folks. Will provide updates and any additional helpful info to y'all in the future. Thanks to the rest of the folks in all of the other failing white paint threads who've provided helpful info as well.

My Super White 2019 Tacoma Off Road has major problems with dead paint on it. It first appeared at 13 months and 15000 miles. I have 2 places on the hood with NO GLOSS, 2 spots on the RR door, both bedsides over the wheel wells, and a small spot on the top of the cab. The service manager had not even looked at my paint when he charged out of his office accusing me of damaging the paint. His dealership applied a paint protection package that I had to purchase if I wanted the mechanical extended warranty from Toyota. The service manager told me the district service rep was not traveling due to covid. To get me by, his detail guy applied more of the paint protection product. It looked OK but I questioned that this is a temporary fix for a long term problem. The dead spots returned in January of this year, and the service manager said it is not a factory defect and did not even discuss bringing in the district rep. After creating a case with corporate, I was sent to the dealer's body shop for repairs. They were confidant they could repair the dead paint with a light buff. They claim that there were probably imperfections seen in the paint at the factory, and with the Super White and fluorescent lights the touch up person thought they had it buffed out when they had not. Multiple employees at the body shop claimed they HAD seen this before and assured me they would fix it permanently. Well It is back. My truck is seriously devalued with major places on the truck THAT DO NOT SHINE! I have had 2 independent shops look at my truck and they say it needs some serious refinish work. Even after I have this repaired, my trucks value is diminished. It's like its been wrecked all over! I have opened another case with Corporate and am waiting for a call. I have been denied the right to have anyone other than the Service Manager at the dealer involved with my problem, and he seemed to know what he was going to see before he looked at the truck. Had they already applied a glaze to these places when the truck was in their inventory? In my opinion, Toyota does not warranty their paint for 3/36. Also, my truck is not in the recall for the Super White peeling problem. So be aware of that issue as well.

The post quoted below is my last update. I hadn't heard anything back since dropping off my truck for the regional rep to inspect it, so I logged online and found these notes. Does anybody have any advice at this point? Should I contact the manager at my dealer for further explanation? Thanks in advance for any advice/tips before I jump back into this fiasco.

So is there any way to know if a specific build date is going to be included in this? We are about to buy a '17 OffRoad in Super White that has 32k miles on it. Paint is flawless right now.
I called our Toyota service writer and he looked up the VIN.. said it was not affected by the paint issues.

So my question is do they know enough by now to be able to make that statement?

Well, at least Scotty is on your side. He suggests that it was poor calibration of the paint robots at the factory and a few other factors. Maybe he can get the attention of Toyota corporate and get these trucks covered under a recall. So far, my one year old Super White 2020 TRD Sport that rolled off the assembly line in August out of the Texas plant has had no problems.

Can’t stand that guy. He just saying whatever will get more clicks. Remember researching 5th gen 4Runners and had one video saying it is the best truck out there.
Next video. Avoid the 5th gen 4runner at all cost. Guy is a troll.

It's been a while since I've posted on this thread. I'm debating on taking my new truck over to a local guy who does paint correction and ceramic coating. Pretty good prices and he also will wash/wax/seal for what I think its a steeper price than his other services. However, I bet he will knock that price way down after a ceramic coating. There is no need to wax or seal after that.

Anyways, I have not noticed anything wrong with my paint thus far. I thought I had seen some weird coloration in front of the hood scoop where they typically apply that plastic film during transport. I've heard people say they get that plastic on before the paint may be done curing and it can cause some issues. So hopefully I'll learn more when this guy looks at it. Theoretically it shouldn't need much paint correction for a brand new truck bought at the end of July.

I totally recommend the ceramic coating anyway.
I just saw this thread after I already did a ceramic coating on my 2021 super white sport. It looks really good, a bit of an extra shine/depth on the white i think. Since i brought the truck in with only 500 miles on it, they did very light clay and polishing before applying the ceramic. They used a product called 3D that comes in a little 2 or 3 oz glass bottle that get applied and rubbed off with a small applicator that looks like a tire shine sponge. I did not know about these issues with the super white color, and hopefully i added some protection to it.
I have tried to read through the numerous posts on this subject but can't really find a clear answer, are the 2020 and 2021 white tacomas having paint issues like the 2017 ones mostly seem to have?

Does the application of the ceramic coating invalidate any Toyota obligation to correct paint issues?
