Fell behind for a bit. Well, over 500 posts ago.

Anyway, do we have a new mayor?

    Questions for you savvy DIY individuals regarding undercoating;

    A) Is it worth my time to spend $300-500 for my own undercoating spray gun and equipment? (I don't even have a compressor right now)

    B) how far does a gallon of undercoating stretch? Ideally I would do 2 cars per year, maybe even a family members for some cash

    C) Can I just use a portable lawn & garden style sprayer and avoid the compressor? I'm skeptical the 40-60 psi thing wont cut it

    D) Aerosol cans? I assume I would assume I need 10+ for 1 vehicle, and at that points its $100+ anyways, and a waste environmentally.

I usually spray my truck with 2 aerosol cans and that’s enough to do the entire frame, but I don’t go too crazy because it’ll all be washed though the wheeling.

I usually do the same, frame and dump a bunch inside the doors. Spray wherever you feel a need. Three or four cans isn't a big deal every year.

    A) Yes
    B) No problem but depends on what your using and how you apply it.
    C) yes you could depending on the product, but it will be messy and wasteful. I did my Ford ranger this way with diluted Auto Tranny fluid and wax dissolved in.
    D) Depending on the product most people are using 4-6 cans, most common mistake is people apply things too thick.

Never ever even think of using any king of rubberized/ tar undercoating. It only traps salt and water underneath and accelerates rust.

The BEST (and watch all the youtube comparisons till your blue in the face) type of BARRIER type of undercoatings are one that are Cosmoline based.

Products like RP-342 (you can buy in an aerosol can, or by the gallon) or CorrosionX-HD or CRC- Heavy Duty Marine (you can buy in an aerosol can, or by the gallon) are the easiest to get a hold here in Canada.

Since they have Cosmoline in them they will not wash off, even with a soapy pressure washer. Only things like Kerosene, paint thinner, naptha will take it off, so make sure you cover all exposed skin when you are spraying it.

Products like ACF-50 and Rust Check Red, are some of the best ACTIVE corrosion inhibitors/converters and lubricants. Also stops Galvanic corrosion (different metals put together).
But they can be cleaned off with soap and water and will not last all on their own.

First time I did my truck when it was only a couple months old.
I washed the underside of my truck and then let it dry for a couple days,
Then fogged EVERYTHING except the interior, brake friction surfaces and serpentine belt (yes even engine compartment)
With ACF-50 using this gun from princess auto
    https://www.princessauto.com/en/2-in-1-engine-cleaning-undercoating-gun/product/PA0000432344
    $45

Then I got a spray gun similar to this one (but you really don't need it)
    https://www.amazon.ca/TCP-Global-Pr...QR18BT7/ref=pd_lpo_3?pd_rd_i=B07QR18BT7&psc=1
    $90

And threaded it into all the holes I could find and gave it a quick fog with ACF-50

Then I filled up the first spray gun with CorrosionX-HD and gave a nice thin coat to the underside.

If anything drips. You sprayed way too much.

I tried Fluid film on my rear shocks as I put them on when it was too cold out to use a cosmoline product.
After 3 months they started to corrode. Fluid Film does not stand upto direct water spray. In the spring I switch back to ACF-50 and Cosmoline.

To do my truck I used about 1/3 of a gallon of CorrosionX-HD. Have not had to re-apply it going on winter 3 now.

BUT I also "fog" the underside, suspension, rad cradle and engine compartment with ACF-50 in the Spring and the fall with ACF-50.
Main reason is it lubricates everything, it really loosens up the suspension noticeably.
It also causes the Cosmoline to soften and flow a little bit again to "Heal" any areas where it got rubbed off.

And by "Fog" I mean turn the pressure to the gun over 75 psi so it comes out like a fog, vs a mist. I use about 1/2 the cup on the engine cleaning gun to do the whole truck in a fog.

Gallon of ACF-50 can do my truck 20x over using it as a fog treatment.

Most Basic setup for a DIY'r

6 Cans of RP342 or CRC Marine,
Goggles, Gloves and a disposable painters suit
and if you can't squeeze under the truck, ramps or jackstands.

Climb underneath and start at one side and pull every plug and shoot in every hole.
Take the tail lights out and the tailgate inner skin to get into some good areas,
rubber plugs under the rocker panels are real handy for getting in there.
Don't forget about the drain hiles on the underside of the door there are 2-3 on each door you can get the spray can straw through,
Check the front cab mounts as they love to collect silt and mud.

Thanks for the very detailed reply!

I was planning to do corossionfree since I had it done last year, But I figure it's a bit thicker than the others, think the Princessauto air gun will hold up?

Also do you use a pressure regulator or just straight out the compressor to the gun?

I could still do the aerosol method as well, 4-6 cans would still be cheaper than taking it in.

Admittedly I will be some who sprays way too much and I already know it :anonymous:

I just picked up this gun for corrosion free. https://www.princessauto.com/en/underbody-coating-gun-with-reservoir/product/PA0008439028

Tested it out and it does have a nice spray with it. The extension hose is a much slower mist out but still good for in panels.

My princess auto one has held up at 90 PSI no problem for the fogging treatments.
for the thicker stuff I just turn the regulator down on the compressor to 30-40 PSI as that's all I need for a thin spray pattern.

Most sir compressors come with a regulator, and since your not painting cars you don't need it to be real accurate,

You can rent compressors at home creepo and most rental places,
even the small 2-5 gallon ones work fine for this, you just have to wait a second every couple seconds for it to catch up. they are about $30-50 a day.

One nice thing about doing it yourself is you will be taking a close look at your truck while doing it, to spot any other potential problems.

Just adding my experience and observations to Daks' already detailed response. I have a 60 gallon compressor I used to apply Fluid Film. Apply sparingly. A gallon of Fluid Film was enough for two applications on both my truck and my wife's Jeep. I ran around 50-60psi using a Princess Auto undercoating gun. I also used a rattle can with the straw for areas the gun couldn't access and ACF-50 where it wouldn't get washed off from road spray. I undercoated the truck a couple of weeks ago while the weather was warmer to allow it creep. Fluid Film has held up reasonably well for me the last couple winters but I haven't driven as much as I used to, however, it does wash off areas that get heavy road spray.
