I found a small rust spot on my quarter panel. Is this something I can fix or is it better left to a professional?

Looks like a paint chip to bare metal that now has rust?

You can do it if the size isnt prohibative.

Dremmel. Smallest polish wheel. Polish the rust out. Touch up paint.

Seconded. Get rid of the rust so it doesn't spread, then seal the spot up with paint to make sure it stays rust free going forward.

So polish rather than sand it? What speed for the dremel, it’s a 10 speed

Edit: My kit comes with 3 different polish attachments. Are they all the same. Should I use the pointed one?

Rust is likely spread further out then the edges of that paint chip. I did a quick dirty job of my chip turned rust spot on the roof/windshield edge a couple months back and I just noticed rust coming through so I apparently didn’t get it all. I’ll have to go back a do a more proper job

Added: I hole punch sandpaper and superglued to a pencil eraser and with a twist motion to keep it as small as possible. I either didn’t go further around the perimeter or my touch up wasn’t done proper enough (I was in a hurry and left it alone for far to long at that point so something was better than nothing). I definitely need to build it up some to minimize the dip I created

What was the method you used for repair?

Start with the smallest polish wheel next to it. Use a little compound polish. Take an angled approach to hit the area with the corner of the wheel. Speed on lowest settings, 10-20. Go slow. Can always take off more if necessary. Widen the area a little until you don’t see the rust anymore. Apply the touch up paint.

Edited above post. I’ll likely use a etch or similar metal primer, then a high build then multiple coats of touchup with a final clear coat. I was using these tiny picks with cotton on the tips (forget actual name)

Does touch up paint require a primer or clear coat for before and after?

I have a couple different sizes this being the smallest. But the touchup paint brush is just too large to make it look somewhat good

Honestly the area is so small that it’s not necessary. I’ve never had a problem with touch up paint adhering to rock chips and I wash my cars vigorously with a pressure washer. I also skip the clear. It dissolves the touch up paint. Despite waiting weeks for it to dry.

Do this enough times and you’ll find out what works and what doesn’t. Dremmel. Small polish wheel. Polish the rust out. Touch up paint. Won’t be perfect. Such is life.

    Enjoy your truck.

Come back because I’ll be tackling this project possibly this week. Does the polish wheel need any type of lubricant so it does burn the surrounding paint?

Worrying WAY too much. Just make sure it’s a very small polish wheel, angle it and go slow. It doesn’t need to be polished to shiny metal. Just enough to remove the rust specs. Apply your paint pen. When done you can’t tell standing 5 feet from the car. Two feet? Sure.

You know it’s a truck right? You entering any car shows bro? If yes, I suggest you get this professionally addressed, wrap the entire truck in Xpel ultimate paint protection film and ceramicpro over that film.
