I have a 2016 Taco with ~152k miles. I have read any and all threads regarding my issue but have never found an answer... It seems if I find a thread with someone that has similar issues, they never post back once the truck is fixed...

About a month ago I was driving to a job pretty far from home and when I was accelerating on to the highway, the engine rpms almost redlined so I let off thinking it got knocked out of gear or something. It was in "D" so I continued to drive and it seemed ok. When I got down the road a ways I got the dreaded check engine, high A/T temp, trac off and went into limp mode going ~70+ on the highway. I took the next exit hoping to find a gas station close but had to pull off to the shoulder. I put the truck in park, turned it off and it was still in limp... I disconnected the battery for ~30min and reconnected hoping it would reset and if A/T temp was high it would cool off enough to get me to the gas station. I reconnected the battery and attempted to "limp" to the closest gas station but didn't make it. I ended up calling AAA and they towed me the 65 miles back to the closest AAA where I live. AAA basically told me one of the coils was bad and I just needed a tune up. I had them replace all coils, spark plugs and they did a 3 step fuel system clean. I had read about the CPS issue with early gen3's so I brought that up to them but they didn't think it was the issue.

I picked the truck up a few days later and it seemed fine. I ordered the CPS from McGeorge and installed it for peace of mind. Drove the truck for a week or so and was getting onto the highway again. When I accelerated rapidly the truck went into limp mode again. This time I just got check engine and trac off. So I pulled over, shut the truck off for a few minutes and it restarted fine. I went about my business that day but it has happed a few times since. It always happens on the highway at high rpms and I have to pull to the shoulder to reset...

I bought a bluetooth OBDII and it reads P0303 misfire. Since the coils and plugs have already been changed I thought about just replacing the fuel injector. Since, I have learned that there are 12 injectors, direct and port... I put some Techron in one tank of gas and a bottle of Lucas in the next but it's still happening... I'm thinking about just taking it in to Toyota to see what they think and what they would charge to replace the fuel injectors. Anyone have this experience or recommendations?

Since you've replaced the spark plugs and coils, I'd be looking into the fuel injector. Also since it happens at higher RPM.

Do you happen to have anything tapped into your INJ fuse port such as raptor lights? I had a very similar experience after getting an oil change from the dealer where my truck stopped dead after accelerating. the issue went away once they removed the fuse tap after spending hours diagnosing the problem as they couldn’t find any issues.. Never had an issue with it before the oil change or since it’s been removed

Were they genuine factory coils and plugs?

Do you ever get a flashing check engine light and/or it won't rev over a certain RPM?

Nothing... Everything is pretty much stock, DCLB TRD Sport. Oh, Leer cap so they did tap into lights. I did check for signs of rodents and reseated harnesses etc.

Yes, AAA wanted $247 per coil (not including labor / not oem). I knew that wasn't right so I looked them up at McGeorge who had them for $78 ea. I asked if I could provide and of course they said no but I showed them that price. They called the local Toyota dealership who had them for $140 so I just went with those... I insisted on oem stuff...

Flashing check engine light usually means active misfire. If your vehicle won't go above a certain RPM as well that's usually an indicator of a catalytic converter issue.

I'm going to swap injector 3 with another to see if the issue follows. The service manual shows the O-Ring and Injection Vibration Insulator as Non-reusable. Is it ok to reuse these parts just to swap?

Sorry, but I'd get it in to a good tech, rather than guessing at parts, it'll most likely save you time and money in the long run.

So this OP complained that others never came back after repair to share their resolution.

    Then he does the same!?!

I am still dealing with this issue. I swapped injectors to see if the issue followed the injector, but still get the P0303 misfire. It's also throwing P0430 too so it could be something with the Cat or the intake plenum door as I saw in another thread.

Hi. Same issue. Rough idle at stop lights, check engine light, high at temp and intermittently on limp mode. Towed it to toyota and they can only find a misfire on cylinder 4. Crankshaft position sensor replaced during the recall in 2017. Hope you were able to find a resolution and point us to the right direction. For now planning to drive the truck 5 hours home and have a local truck shop diagnose and repair it.
