I’m sorry to glom onto this thread, but for the life of me, cannot figure out how much rear differential fluid my 2021 automatic, six cylinder access cab, 2 Wheel Dr., Tacoma needs. This is the model number on the door sticker which doesn’t seem to match anything in the manual..? GRN325L-CRTSHA

Just did a change at 32,000 miles and it was really dark and cloudy. I filled with 4 quarts and at the end of the fill, it began to overflow. I let it run out till it was finished and then put the plug back. When I measured what was in the pan it looks like I drained out about 3- 3 1/2 quarts. Apparently I've overfilled. Will this cause any harm? Should I drain and fill to proper capacity, once I figure out what that is? Thanks!

There is lube around the bearings, gears and axle tubes, so you are not totally emptying all of the rear end lube. You did the right thing by letting it drip and then reinstalling the plug.

I'm a little confused. I've got a 2023 dcsb trd OR. Everywhere I look I see 4.2 for it's capacity on the rear differential. I just changed mine and it took 5 quarts before it started to run out of the fill hole. Maybe the amsoil squeeze bottles didn't actually contain full quarts? Anyone else run into this?

    I just measured what I drained and it's 3.7-3.8qts.
I think there may be some I didn't get out of the bags but not enough to account for the difference.

I also just changed mine a couple weeks ago with Amsoil squeeze bags. Level ground, it used about 4.5 squeeze bags until it started to spill out the fill hole. I'm sure I got most but probably not every last drop out of each bag. Poured what I drained from drain pan into empty gallon container (aka 4-quart container) and it was almost exactly four quarts, so I guess it was a little under-full from the factory (granted there was a little bit of oil left in the pan -- I didn't scrape it clean).

Thank you WesNeedsCoffee for the reply, that makes me feel a lot better. I guess mine was less filled from the factory.
I should've mentioned that I was also on level ground.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Here's what my level looked like before the change. Extra room compared to OEM could definitely account for the extra fluid. I didn't even measure mine and just spilled/filled.

Diff oil is kinda OK to never change…unless it gets water in it.

I changed mine at 123K miles only because I lost some changing an axle bearing and seal….the stuff I dumped out was cleaner than the Redline going back in.

get the truck sorta level-ish and fill it till it comes out the fill plug, then yer done.

At the dealer, we’d do diff oil with the major service every 30K…simply not helpful.

if a limited slip diff with clutches, absolutely, change the oil periodically. E-Locker or open diff that doesn’t generate clutch debris? The oil will outlast the truck.
