I've known a few people through the years who have a large propane tank and a kit that allow them to run it in place of gasoline. The nice thing is when they run out of propane they simply flip a switch and now they're running on a full take of gasoline. Is this still something that people have available? And if so, how is the fuel economy and performance compared to gasoline? Also if it is still a thing who makes the kits to convert etc.?

No, there's a few issues. The biggest is the valves. They burn on Toyotas, I've seen few propane conversions and I've removed both. Loss of compression was the issue.

The old days there were real conversion kits, but modern engines do not like the dry fuel. Looks like the old 22RE has kits.

The other issue is tank mounting, I believe it needs to be certified dependent on state.

Thanks, and too bad it's not an option. I like the idea of filling up once a month or so.

I worked for an LPG facility for a bit. I converted a 1972 Gran Torino with a 351 Cleveland to propane. Huge loss of power. I switched back to gasoline when I changed employers and no longer had free fuel.

If you get free fuel I guess it’s worth it. Otherwise, it leaves a lot to be desired.

I’ve heard of a kit called propain. I don’t know much about it, I think it’s a supplemental system for turbos, not a replacement to gasoline.

Back in the day , I converted my fathers Ford truck to propane . It was a carbureted 1991 with no electronics and the conversion was fairly simple . The engine oil stayed incredibly clean and power was fantastic .
The second truck I installed a propane kit on was a 2008 Ford which needed a lot of aftermarket wiring splices to switch to propane .
You end up creating a ratts nest of soldered wires feeding your trucks factory computer .
Todays computer controlled trucks require all kinds of additional wiring spliced in to the trucks ECM to make propane function properly .
If you do find a propane kit for a newer Tacoma , I highly suggest using qualified technicians to install the kit . The kit will require at least 100 splices into the factory Tacoma wiring .
As mentioned above , propane is a very dry fuel and can burn the valving out in comparison to gasoline with better lubricating properties .
Make sure the kit compensates for cylinder head lubrication . I believe the timing is retarded by the propane kits stand alone computer when running on propane .

Wow, I never considered that it would be less efficient than gasoline. I have heard others say that it was less than on par but never really looked into it.
