RADAR CHECK: We have a number of showers and and a few noisy thunderstorms across Alabama early this morning ahead of a cold front. Expect occasional showers and storms through early tonight with a mostly cloudy sky. We do note that SPC maintains a low end, “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms for Northeast Alabama today…

A few storms there could produce small hail and gusty winds this afternoon and early tonight, but with limited instability and weak dynamic forcing, the overall threat is pretty low. Rain amounts should be under 1/2 inch through tonight.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The sky will clear late tonight as a new surge of dry air moves into the state; tomorrow will be a beautiful autumn day with sunshine in full supply along with a high in the 72-76 degree range. The weather will stay rain-free over the weekend… look for a sunny sky both days. The high Saturday will be in the upper 70s, and we will be close to 80 degrees Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: Another cold front will bring periods of rain and a few thunderstorms to Alabama Monday. There will be some surface based instability available, so strong storms are very possible. Then, after dry weather Tuesday and Wednesday, another batch of rain and storms is likely Wednesday night and Thursday. Strong storms are also possible with this feature… then dry and cool air will follow Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin this morning, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The sky will be clear for high school football games across Alabama tomorrow night with temperatures falling through the 60s.

    For the college games Saturday…

CHATTANOOGA AT SAMFORD (12:00p CT kickoff at Seibert Stadium): Dry and mild with a mostly sunny sky… temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s.

JACKSONVILLE STATE AT SAM HOUSTON STATE (2:00p CT kickoff in Huntsville, Texas): It will be sunny day; expect a temperature near 77 at kickoff, falling back into the low 70s by the final whistle.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN AT NORTH ALABAMA (2:00p CT kickoff at Braly Stadium): The sky will be sunny… the kickoff temperature will be close to 75 degrees, falling into the upper 60s by the end of the game.

RICE AT UAB (2:30p CT kickoff at Protective Stadium): The sky will be mostly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 77 degrees, falling into the low 70s by the fourth quarter.

DELTA STATE AT WEST ALABAMA (4:00p CT kickoff at Tiger Stadium): The sky will be mostly clear. About 79 degrees at kickoff, low 70s by the final whistle.

RHODES COLLEGE AT BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN (4:30p CT kickoff at General Krulak Stadium): The sky will be clear during the game… temperatures will fall from near 77 at kickoff into the 60s by the fourth quarter.

TENNESSEE AT ALABAMA (6:00p kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium): We expect a clear sky with temperatures falling from near 74 at kickoff, into the mid 60s by the final whistle.

SOUTH ALABAMA AT LOUISIANA-MONROE (6:00p CT kickoff in Monroe, LA): Expect a clear sky… temperatures will fall from 82 at kickoff, then through the 70s during the game.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Carlton Fisk made history on this day because of a walk-off home run in the 1975 World Series, after rain had postponed it for three days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Hurricane Joan, the last hurricane of the season, neared the coast of Nicaragua packing 125 mph winds. Joan claimed more than 200 lives as she moved over Central America, and total damage approached 1.5 billion dollars. Crossing more than 40 degrees of longitude, Hurricane Joan never strayed even one degree from the 12-degree north parallel.

RADAR CHECK: A band of showers and storms is over the southeast corner of Alabama early this morning ahead of a cold front; those storms will be out of the state by the time you read this as dry air takes over. We also note there is a dense fog advisory for much of north and central Alabama early this morning; that fog will dissipate by mid-morning as dew points drop. The sky will be sunny today with a high between 72 and 75 degrees; the average high for Birmingham on October 22 is 74.

Tonight will be clear with a low in the mid to upper 40s. And, dry weather will continue through the weekend with lots of sun both days. The high tomorrow will be in the upper 70s, and close to 80 degrees Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: A weather system will bring the chance of a few showers and thunderstorms to Alabama Monday. The main dynamic support will be lifting northward, away from Alabama, and instability will be limited, but a few strong storms are possible. Then, after a mostly dry day Tuesday, a rather robust weather system will impact the Deep South Wednesday. This one will feature good upper air support, strong wind fields, and some instability. SPC has defined a risk of severe thunderstorms for about the southern half of Alabama Wednesday in the their “Day 6” severe weather outlook… but it is too early to discuss specific threats or the timing, but no doubt that could very well be an active weather day for the state.

Then, a surge of cool, dry air rolls into the Deep South Thursday and Friday with highs dropping into the 60s, and lows in the 40s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: Tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through next week.

    From AlabamaWX

RADAR CHECK: A weakening band of showers is moving into Northwest Alabama early this morning ahead of a cold front. There is no risk of severe thunderstorms in Alabama today as the main dynamic support will be passing well to the north… in fact we probably will have very little thunder. Most of the rain today will come over the northern half of the state during the morning hours, and rain amounts should be mostly under a quarter of an inch. Otherwise, today will be mostly cloudy with a high in the 74-77 degree range. The sky will clear this evening.

Tomorrow promises to be a beautiful autumn day with sunshine in full supply along with a high between 68 and 71 degrees.

MID-WEEK RAIN: Clouds will increase Wednesday ahead of a dynamic weather system that will bring rain and a few thunderstorms to the state late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. New model data shows basically no instability over the northern 2/3 of the state, and the severe weather threat will be limited to the southwest counties of the state. SPC has defined a “slight risk” (level 2/5) for much of Mobile County, and the eastern shore of Baldwin county, with a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) as far north as Butler, Monroeville, and Brewton.

The most widespread rain will likely come from midnight Wednesday night to noon Thursday, but light rain will linger into Thursday night over North Alabama. The high Wednesday will be in the mid 70s, but temperatures will hold in the 60s all day Thursday.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Friday will be a cloudy and very cool day with temperatures not getting out of the 50s across the northern half of Alabama. Some light rain is likely at times over North Alabama through Friday night, especially north of U.S. 278. Any lingering light rain there should end Saturday morning, and we will forecast gradual clearing Saturday afternoon as the deep upper low lifts away from the region. Saturday will stay very cool with a high between 58 and 62 degrees.

Sunday will be a fabulous fall day with sunshine in full supply along with a high in the upper 60s.

NEXT WEEK: For now the week looks dry with pleasant days and fair nights… highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is quiet this morning. A deep, non tropical low will form by mid-week off the upper Atlantic Coast, there is some chance it acquires some tropical characteristics as it moves eastward over the open water of the North Atlantic, but it won’t be a threat to land.
